Histori
During the first 115 years, Bag Balm was made by the Vermont family business called Dairy Association Co. Inc. In 2014, the family sold the business to a group of investors who changed the company's name to Vermont's Original, LLC. At the time of sale, the company has seven employees and is located in Lyndonville, Vermont, and Rock Island, Quebec.
Balm Bag products are known by 8-oz green square cans featuring cow heads and red clovers on the lid. It has been produced since 1899. This formula was purchased by John L. Norris of the Wells River, Vermont, a pharmacist sometime before the turn of the century. Initially, it was used only for the cow's udder, but the farmer's wife noticed the softness of their husbands hand, and started using the product itself. Impersonators include Shrimp Shrimp Cream and Shrimp Balm. In a 1983 report, Charles Kuralt reported to CBS that "more than 400,000 units are shipped each year"; the latest sales figures are not disclosed by the company.
Bag Balm was brought to the Arctic by Admiral Byrd, and used by the Allied troops in World War II (to protect weapons from rust). It was used at Ground Zero in New York after 9/11 for a dog-eating dog claw, and was used by American troops in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The active ingredients of Balm Bag are 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate 0.3% (antiseptic) in USP petroleum jelly and a lanolin base.
In the past, the Balm Bag has been documented as containing 0.005% mercury "from the sterols that are teretilized". Mercury has been used in many products as an effective antiseptic, though less frequently today, now the effects of toxic mercury and its compounds are more widely understood. Mercury is no longer listed as ingredients in Bag Balm.
