Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia (Catalan: Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa EulÃÆ' lia , Spain: Catedral de la Santa Cruz y Santa Eulalia ), also known as Barcelona Cathedral , is the Gothic cathedral and chair of the Archbishop of Barcelona, € <â € Font de les Oques ) was completed in 1448. In the late 19th century, the neo-Gothic façade was built on a striking exterior that was common to the Catalan churches. The roof is famous for its gargoyles, featuring a variety of animals, both domestic and mythical.

It is pseudobasilica, vaulted on five alleys, two outer parts divided into chapels. Transept cut. The eastern end is a chevet of nine chalk chapels connected by outpatient. High altars are raised, allowing a clear view into the crypt.

The cathedral is dedicated to Eulalia from Barcelona, the patron saint of Barcelona, a young virgin who, according to Catholic tradition, suffered martyrdom during Roman times in the city. One story says that he was naked on a public square and a magical snowfall in mid-spring covered his nakedness. The angry Romans put him in a barrel with a knife pinned into it and lowered him down the road (according to tradition, now called Baixada de Santa Eulà © ia lia). Saint Eulalia's body is buried in the cathedral's basement.

The choir stalls retain the symbol of the Golden Sheep's knights. In his first trip to Spain, Charles, the Holy Roman Emperor of the future, chose Barcelona as the site of a chapter of the Order. The King has arrived for his coronation as the Count of Barcelona, and the city, as a Mediterranean port, offers the closest communication to the far-flung Habsburg powers, while a large proportion of the cathedral will accommodate the required great ceremonies. In 1518, the preaching of the Order, Thomas Isaac, and his treasurer, Jean Micault, was commissioned to prepare the sanctuary for the first occupation of the chapter in 1519. Juan de Borgonya executed the decorations depicted in the sanctuary.

"The church is named after Eulalia's patron saint from Barcelona: its official name - Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulalia - is Catalan for" Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia. "The name commonly used by La Seu refers to the status of the church as the seat of the diocese."

The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament and the Holy Christ of Lepanto contains the cross which is said to have been from the Battle of Lepanto (1571).

In addition to Saints EulÃÆ' lia and Olegarius, the cathedral contains the tombs of Saint Raymond of Penyafort, Count Ramon Berenguer I and his third wife Almodis de la Marche, and the bishop of Berenguer de Palou II, Salvador Casaà  ± y PagÃÆ' Ã… © s, and Arnau de Gurb buried in the Chapel of Santa LlÃÆ'ºcia, which he built.

The cathedral has a remote Gothic monastery where 13 white swans are kept, a number described by a statement that Eulalia was 13 years old when he was martyred.

A cathedral recovery and restoration program was carried out in 1968-1972.
