A cream is the usual preparation for application to the skin. Creams for application to mucous membranes such as the rectum or vagina are also used. Creams can be considered as pharmaceutical products because even cosmetic creams are based on techniques developed by pharmaceuticals and unprocessed creams greatly used in various skin conditions (dermatoses). Cream is a semisolid dosage form containing more than 20% water or volatile components and is typically less than 50% hydrocarbons, waxes, or polyols as vehicles. They may also contain one or more substances dissolved or dispersed in the appropriate cream bottom. This term has traditionally been applied to semisolid having a relatively liquid consistency formulated either as an oil-in-oil (eg, cold cream) or an in-water oil (eg, fluocinolone acetonide cream) emulsion. However, more recently the term has been restricted to products comprising an oil-in-water emulsion or an aqueous microcrystalline dispersion of long chain fatty acids or alcohols that can be washed with water and more cosmetically and aesthetically acceptable. Creams can be used for drug delivery through the vaginal route (eg, Triple Sulfa vaginal cream). Cream is also used to treat sunburn.
