A gang signal is the way a visual or verbal gang member identifies their affiliates. It can take many forms including slogans, signatures and colored outfits. Many of these, especially slogans and signatures, have become part of popular culture. The wearer usually supports, or is inside, the particular gang. With symbols, graffiti is a large symbol displayed on a wall or train.

Handbands
"Throwing" gang marks (eg, "Arrange", "yard", "walkway") by hand is one of the most recognizable and obvious forms of "claiming". This is used in many situations where other identifiers may be impossible or appropriate, and it can also indicate that gang members are in the area to "do business" rather than just passing. Usually these signs are made with the formation of a finger on one or both hands to create a kind of symbol or letter. It can also serve to convey more specific information, such as what is defined which they represent in larger gangs or in which activities they currently take. The individual letters can be used to tell a story when it is lit in order, each representing the word beginning with that letter. These signs, because they are displayed only when desired (as opposed to the above identifier types), are usually the most consistent across multiple fields. Many of these hand signals are quite close to other common signatures, and this can cause confusion among gang members, non-gang members, and anti-gang authorities.
Another identifier that can be displayed only when desired is a gang handshake, which usually includes some components of gang signatures and/or other hand and finger symbols.

Clothing
Clothing is a strong signal shown by all gangs. Clothing clothing gangs allow rival gangs to identify who the friend is and who the enemy is. For example, uniforms for many Hispanic gangs are standard and easily recognizable. Gangs like the Latin King will wear long white shirts, loose pants, and whether it's bandanas or hats, sometimes both. Black gang members are generally more individualistic with their clothes. The gangs will wear special clothing and certain accessories that will match the color of their crew. Examples include Bloods, whose red gang colors, and Crips, which wear blue.
Bandana
Bandanas can be worn in many different colors and ways. This is done by gang members to mark which gang they are affiliated with. The most popular bandanna colors are red, blue, black, white, gray, and yellow. These are usually worn on the head or in the back pocket of the left or right members of the gang.
