History
GOJO was founded in 1946 in Akron, Ohio, by Goldie and Jerry Lippman. Goldie works at Miller Tire Co. during World War II where graphite, tar, and carbon were often in his hands, as well as the hands of other employees, and difficult to remove. Jerry works at the Goodyear Aircraft factory. Both come home covered with sticky carbon black. They do not like what cleaners use to clean their clothes so they start looking for an effective cleaning product that can be used without water. Goldie and Jerry work closely with Professor Clarence Cook from the chemistry department of Kent State University to formulate a heavy duty hand cleanser. They call it GOJO Hand Cleaner and sell it to rubber workers. Before their products, chemicals such as benzene are used to remove the soil, but this irritates the skin. After the war they began marketing to automotive service facilities. They quit their factory work and started GOJO.
The company's first name and product is GoGo, Goldie's nickname, but other companies have used the name, so the founders came up with GOJO, with "G" standing for Goldie and J "standing Jerry.
GOJO created a liquid soap dispenser in 1950 to dispose of their products in limited quantities after realizing that users were using more than necessary to clean their hands, causing buyers to think the product was too expensive. Jerry Lipmann filed a patent for a dispenser that limited this portion in 1952.
In 2004, Pfizer obtained, from GOJO, the exclusive right to distribute Purell in the consumer market, while GOJO Industries retained the rights to an existing industrial market. Consumer Healthcare Pfizer Division, soon after it was acquired by Johnson & amp; Johnson (on 26 June 2006) transferred the distribution rights of Purell's consumer market into their portfolio, and thus created an agreement between two independent companies. In 2010, GOJO bought the brand again from Johnson & amp; Johnson.
In February 2014, GOJO Industries privately acquired Laboratoires Prodene Klint from Croissy-Beaubourg, France. This acquisition enables both companies to do greater geographic footprings and improve manufacturing operations. Prodene Klint manufactures hygiene products, cosmetics, and professional disinfectants.
On June 6, 2015, GOJO launched the GOJO SMARTLINK Observation System, a mobile application connected to GOJO SMARTLINK web-based software and enables electronic collection and inspection of hygiene compliance and compliance self-protective compliance metrics (PPE).
