History
The hospital dates back to 1721, when it was founded by philanthropist Thomas Guy, who has gained wealth from South Sea Bubble and as an unlicensed publisher of the Bible. Originally founded as a hospital to treat "incurable" discharged from St. Thomas Hospital. Guy has been the Governor and helper of St. Thomas 'and his fellow governors supported his intentions by giving St Thomas' Street south side to pepper rent for 999 years. After his death in 1724, Thomas Guy was buried in the hospital chapel (also dating from the 18th century), in a tomb featuring a marble statue by John Bacon.
The original building forms a courtyard overlooking St Thomas Street, comprising the hall on the east side and Chapel, Matron's House and Surgeon's House on the west side. Inheritance of Ã, Â £ 180,000 by William Hunt in 1829, one of Britain's greatest historical heritage in history, allows over a hundred beds to fit. The Hunt's name was given for the southern expansion of the hospital building that took place in 1850. The two inner quadrants were shared by a monastery that was later restyled and dedicated to members of the hospital who fell in the First World War. The eastern side consists of ward care and 'house counting' with Burfoot Governor's Court Rooms'. The northern quadrangle is dominated by Lord Nuffield statues (1877-1963) who was chairman of the governor for many years and also a great philanthropist.
In 1974, the hospital added the 34-story Guy Tower and Guy's House 29 stories: the complex was designed by Watkins Gray. The Wolfson Center for Age-Related Diseases, which is dedicated to improving outcome conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injuries, was opened by Princess Royal in December 2004.
In October 2005 the children's department moved to London's Evelina Children's Hospital in a field next to St. Thomas close to the Palace of Westminster. The new cancer center, built by Laing O'Rourke at a cost of Ã, £ 160 million, was completed in April 2016.
