Prevention and treatment
Use of hand lotion or hand cream daily can help prevent fingernail formation.
For home care, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing hands, cutting loose leather pieces with nail clippers or clean nail clippers, and applying an ointment-free antibiotic ointment if the area appears to be inflamed. Persistent small images should be evaluated by a doctor.

Complications
Small spikes can be infected and cause paronychia, a type of skin infection that occurs around the nail. Treatment for paronychia varies with severity, but may include immersion in hot brine, oral antibiotic drug use, or clinical lancing. Paronychia itself rarely produces further complications but may cause abscesses, permanent changes in the shape of the nail or the spread of infection.
