History

DJ Daddy G and Andrew Vowles and graffiti-changed artist-rapper Robert Del Naja meet as members of the Wild Bunch collective partying. One of the first homegrown sound systems in the UK, The Wild Bunch became dominant in the Bristol club scene in the mid-1980s.

Massive Attack started as a spin-off production trio in 1988, with an independently released song, "Any Love", sung by falsetto-Carlton singer McCarthy, and then, with great support from Neneh Cherry, they signed a contract with Circa Records. in 1990 - committed to delivering six studio albums and the best compilation of ". Circa became a subsidiary of, and then put in, Virgin Records, which in turn was acquired by EMI. Blue Line (1991), produced jointly by Jonny Dollar and Cameron McVey, who also became their first manager. Geoff Barrow, who later formed Portishead, was a recording apprentice operator and trainee at Bristol's Coach House studio when the album was recorded. McVey (credited during 'Booga Bear') and his wife, Neneh Cherry, provided important financial support and in-kind assistance for Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky's early careers during this period, even paying regular wages to them through the Cherry Organization Bear them. Massive Attack uses guest vocalists, interspersed with Del Naja and Marshall styles (originally Tricky) own sprechgesang , above what is considered a creative British sampling production essentially; a trademark voice that brings together the tempo of hip hop, soul, reggae and other eclectic references, music and lyrical.

In the nineties, all three became famous because they often could not easily associate with each other and work more separately. Andy Vowles (Mushroom), who once regarded himself as the music director of the trio, fiercely left Massive Attack in late 1999, after an ultimatum from two other members to end the group immediately if he did not. Despite taking the Del Naja side in effective Vowles activation and then participating in the show-of-unity webcast as a duo the following year, Grant Marshall (G) also effectively left 2001 because he left the studio altogether. Marshall returned to the studio role in 2005, after joining the tour in 2003 and 2004.

Any Love start

Unsigned, Mushroom (Andy Vowles), Daddy G (Grant Marshall) and 3D (Robert Del Naja) issued "Any Love" as a single, co-produced by Bristol double-acting Smith & Strong.

Blue Line and "Unfinished Sympathy"

3D co-wrote Neneh Cherry's "Manchild", which peaked at number 5 on the UK single chart. Cameron McVey and Neneh Cherry helped them to record their first LP, Blue Line , partly in their home, and the album was released in 1991 on Virgin Records.

The album uses vocalists including Horace Andy and Shara Nelson, a former cohort of Wild Bunch. MC Tricky and Willie Wee, also part of The Wild Bunch, are featured, as well as Daddy G's voice on "Five Man Army". Neneh Cherry sang the background vocals on the environmental song, "Hymn of the Big Wheel".

That year they released "Unfinished Sympathy" as a single, string-arranged song in Abbey Road studio, printed by Will Malone, who was voted the 10th best song of all time in a poll by The Guardian.

The group temporarily shortened their name to "Massive" at McVey's suggestion to avoid controversy related to the Gulf War. They again become "Massive Attack" for the next single, "Safe from Harm".

Protection and Melancholic

After Shara Nelson left, the band brought Everything but Tracey Thorn as vocalist and released "Protection" on September 26, 1994.

With McVey out of the picture, Massive Attack asks for the production talent of former Wild Bunch Nellee Hooper to produce some songs on it, with Mushroom. Other tracks are produced together by Insects and 3D. The dub version, No Protection , was released the following year by Professor Mad. Protection won the Brit award for Best Dance Act. Another collaborator on Protection is Marius de Vries, Craig Armstrong, a classic Scottish pianist, and Tricky. Tricky's solo career took off at the moment and he decided not to collaborate with Massive Attack after this.

1994-5 is also the period of Portishead's Dummy and Tricky's Maxinquaye and the term "trip hop" was created. The media began to refer to the "Bristol scene".

In 1995 Massive Attack started a label distributed by Virgin/EMI, Melancholic, and signed Craig Armstrong and other artists such as Horace Andy, Alpha, Sunna and Day One. This trio adheres to a non-interference philosophy that allows artists to create their albums as they wish.

In the same year The Insects became unavailable for joint production and had parted ways with Nellee Hooper, the band was introduced to Neil Davidge, a relatively unknown producer who claimed his popularity so far was an association with the DNA of an anonymous dance-pop clothing. The first song they did was "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game", a cover version sung by Tracey Thorn for the Batman Forever soundtrack. Initially, Davidge was brought in as an engineer, but soon became a producer.

All three are increasingly fragmented in the lead to the third album, Davidge must co-generate the ideas of three producers separately. The fungus is reportedly unhappy with the post-punk level of direction in which Del Naja, increasingly filling the production void, takes the band.

In 1997, the group contributed to the soundtrack of The Jackal film, recording "Superpredators (Metal Postcard)", a number containing samples from Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Mittageisen" and "Dissolved Girl" songs new with vocals by Sarah Jay (later remixed for the next album), which was featured at the start of the 1999 Matrix movie, although not on the official soundtrack.

Later that year they released their single, "Risingson", from what will be their third album, Mezzanine .

Mezzanine , Teardrop, Vowles shared and Absence Marshall

Mezzanine is Massive Attack's most commercially successful album, selling nearly 4 million copies. Angelo Bruschini became their permanent guitarist on record and live.

The lead single, after "Risingson" is "Teardrop", sung by Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser. The song was accompanied by a video directed by Walter Stern, from an animatronic fetal song. Horace Andy was invited back to sing on three songs, including "Angel" and a track band made for The Jackal movie, "Dissolved Girl", sung by Sara Jay, diremix to put on record.

Mezzanine went on to win the Q Award for Best Album and was nominated for Mercury Award.

Touring extensively, friction between Mushrooms and others comes to the head. Mushrooms are not happy with the group's directions, Del Naja's dominating role, and should appear on the tour.

Around this time, Del Naja, with Davidge ran into the Ridge Ridge studio with friends and band members Lupine Howl (composed of former members of the Spiritualized band, including Damon Reece who later became the permanent drummer of Massive Attack and one of two live drummers) to the LP The fourth massive attack, bringing things further toward the rock.

2001 also saw the release of Eleven Promos , a DVD of all 11 Massive Attack music videos so far, including "Angel", a Ã, Â £ 100,000 promo

Del Naja Window 100 , return Marshall and Collected

With Daddy G while no longer involved in the studio, Davidge and Del Naja direct their own "LP4". Requesting vocals SinÃÆ'Â · o ad O'Connor and Horace Andy The 100th Window was mastered in August 2002 and released in February 2003.

Showing no samples or cover versions, 100th Window was not received very well in the UK as another record, although the album received a warmer welcome internationally; scored 75 out of 100 on the Metacritic review aggregation site. The group also collaborated with Mos Def on the song "I Against I", which appeared on the single "Special Cases" and the soundtrack for Blade II . "I Against I" is also known as the only track of the 100th Window session featuring a writing credit from Daddy G.

Also in 2003, Del Naja was arrested on child pornography charges, which were widely reported in the media. Del Naja was soon eliminated as a suspect (though he was accused of having ecstasy and could not get a US visa for a while) with Daddy G and fans lending their support. The capture affects the start of the tour schedule of 100th Window .

Despite the difficulties of 2003, the 100th Window sold over a million copies and toured extensively (including Queen Square, Bristol - a one-off selling concert set up in a downtown park, seen as a homecoming ).

Afterwards, Del Naja and Davidge approve an offer from director Louis Leterrier, to print the entire soundtrack for Danny The Dog, starring Jet Li. Dot Allison, who had sung with the band on the 100th Window tour, sang the final title song, "Aftersun". Davidge also printed the soundtrack for the movie Bullet Boy , with Del Naja in the final title.

In 2005, Daddy G began to enter the studio, although few came from the material. He decided to work with a production duo, Robot Club, in another studio, feeling that he would be more free to develop the song he wanted. Meanwhile, Del Naja and Davidge recorded with a number of different singers and created a song called "Twilight", for the album UNDLE War Stories. Later that year, Massive Attack decided to release their compilation album Collected in 2006. They released it with a second disc, consisting of previously released non-album tracks and unreleased sketches.

"Underground Weather"/ Heligoland era

In 2007, Del Naja and Davidge scored three soundtracks, In My Whole Life Prison (which featured a song called "Calling Mumia" with vocals by American rapper Snoop Dogg), in Seattle i> and Water Difficulty .

In February 2007, Massive Attack hosted a charity charity for the Hope Foundation, a charity for Palestinian children, strengthening their reputation as one of the politically involved bands in Britain. In 2008, it was announced that Massive Attack will curate Southbank Meltdown in the UK, a week-long event. It was suggested in the interview that this event would inspire Massive Attack back in action, having spent several years drifting towards completion of their fifth studio album.

Later that year, Del Naja and Daddy G headed to the Damon Albarn studio to write and jamming. Around this time, Davidge printed the soundtrack for the movie Paul McGuigan, and in December Del Naja completed the score for 44 Inch Chest with The Insects and Angelo Badalamenti.

Davidge and Del Naja returned together in 2009 with Daddy G to complete the fifth album, incorporating a bit of Albarn material. It was later announced that the band would be the headline at the 2009 Bestival festival, and soon after that they would tour to England and Europe. In May, Robert Del Naja's instrumental "Herculaneum", featured in the movie Gomorra, won the Italian award for Best Song. Later that month, Del Naja and Marshall received the special Ivor Novello award for Extraordinary Contributions to British Music.

On May 29, Jonny Dollar died of cancer aged 45, survived by his wife and four children. Dollar is a programmer and producer directly behind Blue Lines, writing some melodies that form the basis for the string of "Unfinished Sympathy".

On August 25th, their new EP, Splitting the Atom , was announced. Another new track on EP was revealed to be "Pray For Rain" by Tunde Adebimpe, "Psyche" by Martina Topley-Bird and Guy Garvey "Bulletproof Love". The last two songs appear as remixes of the album.

The fifth album was released on 12 November 2009, and it was called Heligoland , after the Heligoland islands in Germany. "Weather Underground" has become the title of his work. Del Naja said, "I think it must be more organic". The opening song, "Pray For Rain" featured TV guest vocals on Radio Tunde Adebimpe, and Damon Albarn and Hope Sandoval also provided guest vocals on the album.

On October 10, 2011, a 12 "limited circulation was announced, called" Four Walls/Paradise Circus. "The record contains a long-awaited collaboration with Funeral, as well as a remix of" Paradise Circus ", which is limited to 1000 copies.

The song "Paradise Circus" was used during the opening credits of the BBC series Luther during the opening episode of the ABC's Quantico series, and during the final scene of the 6th episode of both season 2 of Revenge, while the song has also been remixed by some famous artists, such as Canadian electronic music duo, Zeds Dead.

On December 11, 2011, their song "Splitting The Atom" was premiÃÆ'¨red as the theme song on Luck , an HBO television series starring Dustin Hoffman.

Ritual Spirit EP, new album, and Tricky's return

In an 2013 interview for his first solo performance since 2008, Del Naja insists that not only the new Massive Attack albums in his works, but the reunion rumor with Tricky is true. Tricky has not been featured on the Massive Attack album since 1994's Protection .

"The idea is to record next year", he said. "We really got very good right now because we did not spend time in the studio together," he said with a wry smile. "Tricky and I wrote some new songs in Paris last year, which have not seen the light of day - but it's fun. They should be on their next album."

On February 5, 2014, it is certain that Massive Attack will be the headline in Secret Solstice, the new music festival in ReykjavÃÆ'k from June 20 to June 22. On February 21, 2015, confirmed through the Massive Attack Facebook page that they will collaborate with Run the Jewels.

On January 21, 2016, the iPhone app "Fantom" was released. The app was developed by teams including Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja and let users hear parts of four new songs with their remixes in real time, using mobile location, movement, clock, heart rate, and camera. On January 28, 2016, Massive Attack released a new EP, Ritual Spirit , which includes four songs released on Fantom. This EP was written and produced by Del Naja and a long-term collaborator, Euan Dickinson. This is their first release since the 2011 Four Walls/Paradise Circus collaboration with Burial, and the first time since 1994, fellow hop-hop-hop-artist Tricky has been featured in Massive Attack content. Scottish hip-hop group Young Fathers, rapper London Roots Manuva and singer Azekel also performed at EP.

On July 26, 2016, Massive Attack previewed three new songs: "Come Near Me", "The Spoils", and "Dear Friend" at Fantom, an iPhone app that previously previewed four songs from Ritual Spirit > EP. On July 29, 2016, they released a new single, "The Spoils", which included "The Spoils" and "Come Near Me" both of which were previewed in Fantom. "The Spoils" featured vocals from American singer-songwriters and frontmani Mazzy Star Hope Sandoval, and "Come Near Me" featuring British vocalist Ghostpoet. A music video for "Come Near Me", directed by Ed Morris, and featuring Kosovo actress Arta Dobroshi, was released on the same day as the single. The video for "The Spoils", featuring Cate Blanchett, and directed by Australian director John Hillcoat, was released on August 9, 2016.

Music styles

Some of their most famous songs have been without choruses and have featured dramatic atmospheric dynamics, delivered via distorted guitar crescendos, orchestral orchestra settings or basslines that stand out, shift/shift, backed by high and demanding production values, involving digital editing sometimes - sometimes overload and mixing. The speed of their music is often slower than the usual British dance music at the time. These different sonic, psychological, soundtrack, and DJist techniques, forming a much-imitated style of journalism, began to dub the "hop journey" of the mid-nineties and beyond, although in an interview in 2006, G said, "We used to hated that terminology [trip-hop] so bad, 'laugh.' You know, as far as we know, Big Attack music is unique, so to put it in the box is to put it aside and say, "Right, we know where you people are coming from. "

Massive Attack vs Adam Curtis

Del Naja designed and designed an eight-night festival with filmmaker Adam Curtis - in collaboration with UVA (United Visual Artists) - premiered in Manchester, England, England in July 2013. The festival featured the film Curtis, unofficially titled The Plan , which is projected on the big screen around the audience, while the music from Massive Attack is integrated throughout the movie. Del Naja, who arranges the soundtrack of the film, describes the experience as a "collective hallucination" and is also featured at the Manchester Festival in July 2013. The show was performed at the Ruhr International Festival in Germany in August 2013 and Park Avenue. Armory in New York City in September 2013.

Activism and politics

Del Naja has been critical of British government policy. He strongly opposed the 2003 war against Iraq, and with fellow musicians Damon Albarn personally paid for a full page ad in NME magazine.

In 2005 Del Naja arranged and performed at a charity concert in Bristol for Tsunami Relief with Adrian Utley and Geoff Barrow of Portishead. The two night event featured Massive Attack, Portishead, Robert Plant, The Coral, and Damon Albarn. Del Naja and Marshall made three shows in 2005 to support Hoping, an organization that helps raise money, support projects for Palestinian youth in refugee camps in the Gaza Strip and western banks, Lebanon and Syria.

Del Naja, musicians Damon Albarn and Brian Eno, and United Visual Artists contributed to a demonstration against the renewal of the Trident nuclear program held on board the Arctic Sunrise ship on the Thames River in 2007.

In 2008 Massive Attack curated the annual Meltdown festival in the south bank of London. During two weeks of live performances, cinema and art, they worked with human rights lawyers Clive Stafford Smith and his Suspension organizations that used the law to uphold the human rights of the prisoners.

In 2010, the video for shooting by Oliver Chanarin and Adam Bloomberg for the song "Saturday come slow", featuring Damon Albarn, drew attention to the use of music in torture. In 2010, Massive Attack contributed revenues from Lincoln car ads to a cleanup campaign after the BP oil spill disaster.

Massive Attack donated all the proceeds from their 2010 Atlas Air EP this week to War Child, a charity previously backed by the band when they contributed to the HELP album.

Massive Attack has previously played two shows in Israel, but has rejected a recent offer. They have described this as "not an act of aggression against the Israelis" but "against the [Israeli] government and its policies", arguing that "the Palestinians [in Gaza and western banks] do not have access to the same basic benefits that people Israel. "

Del Naja and Thom Yorke of Radiohead held an unofficial party at the UBS building occupied in the city of London in December 2011, in support of the international Occupy movement.

On November 14, 2012, on the eve of the Bristol Mayor's election, the band caused some surprises by authorizing independent and former Lib Dem millionaire George Ferguson, citing the need for a mayor who will help facilitate creative projects into the city, and not just following the party's political agenda. Previously, Del Naja publicly criticized Ferguson for being a member of the Society of Merchant Venturers, a 16th-century organization that has many connections with the Bristol slave trade.

During their Istanbul concert Massive Attack called those killed in anti-government protests on the outside screen behind them with the following sentence, Their killers are still out there and We will not forget Soma .

In July Del Naja and Marshall visited the Bourge-El Barajneh refugee camp in Lebanon to meet with Palestinian volunteers at an educational center. The band's profits from the show at Byblos were donated to the center.

Facebook

In March 2018, Massive Attack suspended their Facebook page by stating, "Keeping in mind Facebook is ignoring your privacy, lack of transparency and disregarding accountability - Massive Attacks will be temporary."

Banksy Claim

In September 2016, freelance journalist Craig Williams claimed Robert '3D' Del Naja was actually an elusive graffiti artist Banksy or as an alternative theory, that Banksy was actually a group of artists led by Del Naja and associated with the band. Williams plotted the appearance of Banksy's artwork and found some to coincide with Massive Attack tour dates. Del Naja immediately dismissed the claim that said, "He's also a mate, he's been to a few shows, it's purely a matter of logistics and coincidence, nothing more."

In June 2017, drum and bass DJ Goldie during an interview with Podcast Distraction Pieces unintentionally referred to Banksy as "Robert", which is consistent with Del Naja's first name, thereby advancing the claim of "Del Naja-Banksy".
