Nasty Gal is an American retailer specializing in fashion for young women. The company has more than 550,000 customers in more than 60 countries. Founded by Sophia Amoruso in 2006, Nasty Gal was named "The Fastest Retail of Growing" in 2012 by INC Magazine. Nasty Gal is based in Los Angeles. Amoruso initially started selling vintage clothing from his eBay account, and then switched to selling his own clothing label, on his own website. In 2017, the company was purchased by the BooHoo Group of Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code.

History
In 2006, while working as a campus security host at the University Art Academy, Sophia Amoruso launched a ebay store based in San Francisco, selling old clothes. The store was named Nasty Gal Vintage, a name inspired by Betty Davis. On their website, the company calls Davis "the patron saint of a badass woman... complete with a high lamon platform of thigh shoe." The eBay store sells vintage clothing that Amoruso will buy at a thrift store; one such finding, the Chanel jacket he bought at the $ 8 Salvation Army store, he sold for over $ 1,000.
As part of Nasty Gal's founding process, Amoruso initially handled everything from buying merchandise to snapshots and writing product descriptions. Amoruso primarily uses MySpace to communicate with its customers and in 2007, has built a followership of 60,000 friends on the platform. In June 2008, Amoruso transferred Nasty Gal Vintage from eBay and to his own destination site, www.nastygal.com. Nasty Gal's first employee is through Craiglist of Christina Ferrucci. Ferrucci serves as a Senior Buyers and Directors Buying Nasty Gal for over six years. Ferrucci left Nasty Gal in November 2014.
In 2009, Nasty Gal moved into his first storage room in Berkeley, California; the company's growth pushed the next step shortly afterwards to a 7,500 square foot warehouse in Emeryville, California. Amoruso has stressed in an interview the importance of social media for the growth of Nasty Gal.
In 2010, Nasty Gal moved its headquarters to Los Angeles, California. In 2012, the company joined the Portfolio Index with an investment of $ 9 million in early 2012, followed by Series B funding of $ 40 million in August 2012.
In 2012, online retailers employ approximately 110 people and have opened additional distribution centers in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, while 2011 revenues reached $ 24 million, marking a three-year growth rate of 11.2%. At the end of 2012, Sarah Wilkinson of ASOS joins Nasty Gal as Vice President of Design company.
In 2014, Nasty Gal opened its first brick and mortar store in Los Angeles at 8115 Melrose Avenue. The store features Gaia Galia's shoes, clothing, accessories and comrades, along with items from brands including Jeffrey Campbell, For Love and Lemons, Cameo and vintage by designer labels like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Moschino.
On January 12, 2015, Amoruso announced that Sheree Waterson would take over as CEO of Nasty Gal. Waterson, former president of Nasty Gal, is now partnering with Amoruso to expand its retail presence on a larger scale. Amoruso continues as founder and executive chairman of Nasty Gal.
Waterson also joined the board of directors of Nasty Gal with Amoruso and Index Ventures partner Danny Rimer.
On March 27, 2015, Nasty Gal opened a brick and mortar store both in Santa Monica. The 6,500 square foot store is located on the popular Third Street Promenade and designed by architect Rafael de Cardenas. The shop has a full-service shoe salon and two-way mirror fitting room.
In 2016, Nasty Gal filed for bankruptcy. The British-owned BooHoo Group announced in February 2017 that they had purchased Nasty Gal. Nasty Gal will now be under the umbrella of BooHoo's portfolio.
In 2017, Nasty Gal will open the first UK pop-up shop on London's Carnaby Street in November.

Controversy
In 2015, a lawsuit filed accusing Nasty Gal of allegedly shooting four employees for pregnancy violating California law.
Nasty Gal has faced online criticism in various publications due to the "toxic" work environment and many negative reviews about Glassdoor from disgruntled employees.
Original collection
The original label Nasty Gal was launched in 2012 and consists of a limited edition style. In September 2012, Nasty Gal debuted the first Nasty Gal Fall/Winter 2012 Collection - Strange Science - during New York Fashion Week. Since then, the company has continued to roll out various collections of its time for great fashion seasons of the year. In addition, Nasty Gal launched its first shoe collection, Cult Shoe by Nasty Gal, in August 2013. In 2014, Nasty Gal embarked on three additional collections at home: Nasty Gal Denim Collection inspired by vintage, Nasty Gal Swimwear, and Lingerie Gal Nasty. Nasty Gal also collaborated on the swimwear line with Minimale Animale in 2014. In addition, Nasty Gal collaborated with M? A? C Cosmetics on the collection of lipstick capsules and nail polish in December 2014.
Expansion to publishing
In 2012, Nasty Gal released the first edition of what was planned to be a semi-annual "lifestyle magazine, titled Super Nasty , featuring displays on" fashion, music and culture, "and included free on order customer. Amoruso serves as editor-in-chief.

In 2014, Gal Nasty founder Sophia Amoruso published the bestseller, #GIRLBOSS. After the book launch, Amoruso launched the GIRLBOSS Foundation to inspire women to take their careers into their own hands. The Foundation Award gives quarterly to women with creative projects.
On April 21, 2017, Netflix released their new original show, Girlboss , loosely based on Sophia Amoruso's work on the Nasty Gal brand. This series has been canceled after Season 1.
