Postmark - Wikipedia

The mark is a postmark created on letters, parcels, postcards or the like that indicate the date and time when the item was sent to the postal service. Modern postmarks are often applied in conjunction with cancellations or killers that mark stamps (s) have been used (although in some circumstances there may be postmark without killer, and sometimes postmark and killer shaping sustainable design), and two terms are often used interchangeably, if wrong. Postmarks can be applied by hand or by machine, using methods such as roller or inkjet, while digital postmarks is the latest innovation. Pos Pos's local post has a rubber stamp cap, which parts are hand-painted. On Hideaway Island, Vanuatu, Underwater Post Office has an embossed postmark.

Histori

The first postmark (called "Mark Bishop") was introduced by British Postmaster General Henry Bishop in 1661 and only shows the day and month of delivery to prevent delay of mail by the operator.

In Britain during the latter part of the seventeenth century some postmarks were designed for use with the London Penny Post, a postal system that delivered items sent into the city of London. Postmarks bear the start of a particular post office or handle a shared home with a separate time stamp. Postage has been paid in advance and postmark applied to the goods sent through the stamp of inked hands. Some historians also consider this post as the world's first postage stamp.

In the 19th and early 1900s it was common for letters to receive many postmarks that indicate the time, date, and location of each post office delivering or sending mail, and this is sometimes true, even at a higher level low (see "backstamp"). While almost every contemporary postmark includes location as well as dates, in 2004 New Zealand Post announced plans to remove the location on their postmark and include only the date; However, information about this can be determined by a three-digit code on the postmark.

In the United Kingdom, the first postmark used for cancellation of a new postage stamp is Maltese Cross, so named because of its shape and appearance. This is used in conjunction with an applied date stamp, usually to the back of the letter, which indicates the date of posting.

Different types of postmarks include the railway post office ("RPO") and maritime (on-board ship) postmarks. Postmarks on navy ships during wartime sensitive operations are sometimes "clean", showing less information than usual to prevent travel routes or other details from falling into enemy hands. Similar to this is "censored postmark", which is overprinted with black annihilation of the time and place of delivery for the same reason.

The Pony Express uses different postmarks on letters carried throughout the Western United States. There are only 250 known examples of Pony Express letters/posts that are still in various collections today with one of more than a dozen different peg types.

Post Hawai'i once had a postmark of surfing letters, for the blanket that was passed by the surfboard.

A color postmark is in a collectible envelope issued by the US Postal Service that commemorates the inauguration of George W. Bush in 2004.

Although the postmark is applied almost universally by or under the authority of the authorized postal department, service or authority in the United States, it may be possible to receive permission to apply your own postmark, called Mailing Permit Mailer, and under certain conditions specified by law personally invited in the United States, personalized mail may be canceled with a personal postmark. Unofficial entities that issue artistamps may use a postmark-like mark as well.

Marcophily is the study of postmarks and there are many works published on postmarks covering topics from before 1900, such as luxury cancellations, to this day. This includes what is called the luxury cancellation of the United States for modern postmarks engines.

Postmarks are used less now than ever before, with the appearance of meter labels, some types of computer postage, and computerized charges that people can print from their own PC (called PC Shipping in the United States, these services are offered by companies like Stamps.com and Neopost , Inc.). This Indicia is not always postmarked by the Post Office but if put in a mail flow later than the date listed on them, they stamp the post about 50% of the time. Because of this, it is a bad idea to try and use the date on your postage as a postmark.

Official examples of numismatic items to postmarks occurred on 13 April 1976 when the US issued a new two-dollar bill. People can buy bills at face value, add first class stamps (at 13 cents), and have postmark combinations to show that they are the first day of publication. A large number of these are produced and they remain public.

Ink color

When the first universal postal system started in the UK with its Penny Black, the postmark uses red ink for contrast. This does not work, and the stamp is converted to a non-black color so that the postmark can use black ink.

The majority of postmarks are currently black, with red (especially in the US with local post office handstems) following, although sometimes they are in other colors. This is especially true in the case of a postmark if the color in question has multiple connections to the warning.

Cancellation rating

The study of postmarks is a special branch of philately called marcophily. This can bring added value to the stamps with historical significance. The other parameters are scarcity and attraction. In particular, the stamps issued by the Austrian Empire during the period 1850-1867 (5 issues before Austro-Hungarian compromise in 1867), were collected for their diversity and beauty. More details can be found in the Valuation of the cancellation of the Austrian Empire.

A special or rare postmark can substantially increase the cap value. In addition, in addition to daily postings there is a postmark that shows the first day of a particular stamp publication and a pictorial cancellation to commemorate local events, anniversaries, and likes and slogans that advertise events or provide information to the public. (There have been recent changes to the term "pictorial postmarks" rather than "pictorial cancellations" by the USPS.)

There are several examples of "fake coverings" produced by philatelic counterfeiters, usually to increase in value, where postmark has been altered in several ways; for example, by changing the date.

Practical use

Postmarks are often regarded as official confirmation that the item of the cover item (letter, parcel, etc.) is delivered at a certain location on a certain date. For example, the postmark date can be very important. In the United States, the Internal Revenue Service will still consider the refund of income taxes submitted on time even if it receives them late if they are stamped on time, and this date (with, perhaps, other proof of delivery), may have significant meaning in the case of legal filing and proof of service (although in this case the date may be seen as "on time" if the postmark date is no later than one day after the date service should be made). Entries into sweepstakes and contests, and jury art exhibitions, may also have a "postcard deadline," and in at least one case it may have significance about the date of class withdrawal.

Postmarks should not be confused with killers in the form of lines, trunks, etc. Which is used to cancel stamps. Nor should a postmark be confused with overprints in general, or pre-cancellations (stamps that have been canceled before envelopes or embedded packets are delivered or stored for receipt into the mail stream; they most often have taken the pre-named city-printed form on the stamp ) specifically, which generally do not show dates.
