Plot
Claire Bartel happily married and became pregnant with her second child. On a routine checkup, she was sexually abused by her new obstetrician. Victor Mott. Traumatized, she tells her husband Michael, who encourages her to report her to the state medical board. The charge initially requested four more women to come forward on the same charge, and many charges were filed against Dr. Mott by the district attorney's office. After seeing the news report on the allegations, Dr. Mott commits suicide so as not to be arrested and put on trial. Then, the pregnant widow of Dr. Mott was told by his lawyer that her husband's assets had been frozen for lawsuits and that he would lose his mansion. Mrs. Mott went to work early after collapsing from the tense news her lawyer gave her, and she lost her baby and, after the bleeding, was given an emergency hysterectomy. While recovering at the hospital, she sees news featuring Claire as the woman who goes to the state medical board, leading Mrs. Mott to swear revenge.
Claire eventually gave birth to a boy named Joey, and, looking for a nanny, hired Mrs. Mott under the alias "Peyton Flanders". Mrs. Mott started a campaign to bring Claire down. He started feeding Joey secretly, effectively brainwashing him to believe that Mott was his mother (which caused him to reject Claire), and encouraged his daughter Emma to keep a secret from her mother and try to change it. against Claire. He also secretly destroyed Michael's office proposal. Knowing that Claire's close friend, Marlene, was Michael's ex-girlfriend before she married Claire, Mrs. Mott also suggested to Michael that she arranged a surprise party for Claire, so Marlene and Michael met in secret. Claire accuses Michael of having an affair with Marlene, only to find the party audiences waiting in the next room.
Solomon, an intellectually disabled handyman who had helped Bartels, found Mrs. Mott feeding Joey. Mrs. Mott then planted a pair of Emma pants in Solomon's toolbox, leading Claire to fire her. Emma tells Claire that Solomon has never done anything to her, but Claire refuses to believe in Emma, ââcausing her to turn against her mother as planned. Mott. Unknown to the family, except Emma, ââ"Solomon began watching them.
Claire starts to doubt "Peyton" and tells Michael so. Mrs. Mott overheard, then set up a trap for Claire in the greenhouse. Meanwhile, Marlene discovers her identity. Mott; Marlene plans to warn Claire, but Mrs Mott tricked her into a greenhouse, where she was killed by falling glasses. Mrs Mott, who knew Claire had asthma, emptied all her inhalers. When Claire found Marlene's body, she had an asthma attack and was briefly hospitalized. When Michael was puzzled over Marlene's death and his wife's condition, Mrs Mott, dressed in a white nightgown, tried to seduce her; he rejected his progress.
Claire finally reveals the truth about Ny. Mott, confronts him, and reveals the truth about "Peyton" to Michael because of Mrs. Mott claims that he and Michael are having an affair. Michael denied this claim and kicked Mrs. Mott out. Claire then tells Michael to call the police when he realizes that Mrs Mott is cheating the greenhouse to kill her and not Marlene. Michael tells Claire to get Emma and Joey so they can head to the hotel to be safe.
Later, Mrs Mott broke into the house and lured Michael into the basement where she dropped her down the stairs and broke her legs with a shovel. Mrs. Mott then tried to take Emma and Joey, but after seeing Mrs. Mott attacked his mother, Emma locked Mrs. Mott in the nursery. Mrs. Mott ran away, and heard Joey in the attic. He enters and sees Solomon helping the children run away. Claire came in and Mrs. Mott tries to kill him, but stops after Claire seems to have another asthma attack, allowing Ny. Mott taunted him. When Mrs Mott tried to bring Joey, Claire bounced back, after faking her asthma attack, and pushing Mrs. Mott out of the window, stabbing it on a wooden fence and killing her. Touched by how Solomon risked his life to protect his family, Claire welcomed him back to their lives as they left the attic while police and paramedics arrived home.

Gene Siskel stated that he "had trouble accepting the premise of this image because of the relaxed way in which the nanny was employed in the early scene by the mother," citing that the premise is unrealistic. However, he praised the character of Julianne Moore, saying, "more trustworthy, is the supporting character of her best friend" and that "the friend is a great character, too bad she does not have more scenes in the picture." She mentioned that "her biggest objection to Hands That Muffle Cradle is the scene with children in danger or psychic pain. " Siskel finally commented that "there are some fun fun at The Hand that Rocks the Cradle to make sure, but I also find many unpleasant things." Roger Ebert, however, has a higher opinion of the film, stating that he "found the film is working" and that "It touches fear and that's why it appeals to us." Ebert praised De Mornay's appearance in the movie, saying, "he, I think, a very good job, a very good job, to be a villain in this movie and I think it's an effective performance" and that he found the kids scene "very interesting because I see them as a portrait of a woman's crime"
Vincent Canby of The New York Times said of the film that " The Hand That Rocks the Cradle " is intended to scare the audience more or less by way of early nickelodeon visitors' fears when they saw pictures of trains rushing up to them. The audience is not asked to think, just to react "and that" The Hand That Rocks the Cradle proves again that not thinking is too easy even today. Although Mr. Hanson is a beautiful filmmaker, he is not a very persuasive person here. Do not be lulled by people who will compare The Hand That Rocks the Cradle to Fatal Attraction, featuring three powerful characters who, in one way or another, are ready to answer for their actions. "He added that" Mr. Hanson creates a sometimes sometimes effective shock effect to satisfy those who want to screech in artificial fears. More often the device he uses is very tired tricks like cutting two sets of simultaneous, often innocent, actions to create the ill-intentioned tension. "Rebecca Hawkes of The Daily Telegraph gave the film a rating of 3 stars out of 5 and said that" This is a tense, visually annoying moment, that helps make the movie into something more than a fun thriller " , while Sue Heal of The Radio Times rated the film 4 stars out of 5, stating that "It's purely an unmanageable law, of course, but it's very effective until the last 30 minutes, when the plot is rapidly self-destructive."
