Undertow is the debut full-length studio album by American Rock Band Tool, released in 1993. According to Allmusic, Undertow helps heavy metal and rock music progressive still stands out as the mainstream music style, and allows multiple bands to break through to the mainstream. It was released at a time when grunge was at the peak of its popularity, and pop punk slowly began garnering mainstream attention. AllMusic sees the album's success in "a haunting and horrendous visual that complements the album's nihilistic mood." As of July 7, 2010, Undertow has sold 2,910,000 copies in the US and has been certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.
The album was recorded between October and December 1992 at Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, and at Grandmaster Recorders, Hollywood, California, by Sylvia Massy. Some of the songs featured in the album are songs that the band decided not to release on their first EP, Opiate .

Undertow is the only complete album release with original bassist Paul D'Amour.
Comedian Bill Hicks is known as "inspiration" in the liner notes, and Undertow is the only album Tool that was released while he was still alive. Its presence will be displayed again in the next Tool album, ÃÆ' â ⬠nima .
Chris Haskett, then with Rollins Band, credited in liner notes with "sledge hammer", may relate to "three pianos and shotguns with large hammers" on "Disgustipated". Adam Jones recalled a story in which the band bought two used pianos with the aim of blowing them up with guns in the Grand Master Studio indoor parking lot and placing the resulting sound to the tape. Apparently the ladies who run the studios are happy as long as they clean up the mess afterward. Since the incident, Tool has been approached by other bands who claim to have seen the gun holes left by them on the carpark wall.

Artwork
The art of the album was designed by Adam Jones. Photographs in liner notes from a fat, naked woman, a naked man with normal weight, and band members with pins on the sides of their heads generated controversy, so the album was removed from stores like Kmart and Wal-Mart. The band reacted with the release of another version, which depicts a giant barcode with a white background. This album version includes notes from the band.
The message in the photos of the band members reads "Believe me believe me believe me, believe me, I just want to start this, say you will not go, this is love.I will make a weapon out of my imperfection, lie down and let me show you another way just one of these sacred media that keep me calm cleans and cleanses me in water twice as hard than euphoria my reason is too sympathetic nobody tells you to come, I hope it sucks you interrupting life is necessary. "All lyrics which appears in this section appear in this order: "Sober", "Crawl Away", "4 à °", "Prison Sex", "Flood", "Undertow", "Intolerance", "Swamp Song", Disgustipated "One the only missing line is "I will make a weapon out of my imperfections", Maynard's original lyrics for "Bottom" before they were modified by guest Henry Rollins.
In some versions of the album, when a black CD tray is removed from the casing, a cow image licking what appears to be its genital area is revealed. In other versions of the album, which are released internationally, cow pictures licking the genital area can be seen without problems under the transparent support of the disc. An accredited cow photo in the album's liner notes has been taken by Danielle Bregman. The ribs are also on the front cover of the album, but the fat lady is absent from the musical album booklet; only members of the band are depicted.
Adam Jones's pig, Moe, appeared on the back cover amid various fork stands.

Releasing history
- Vinyl promotions do not include the last song "Disgustipated" so the entire album can fit into one disc. Due to the promotion, it is possible that it was released before the regular presses, therefore, only the year listed.
- The year 1996 was the year when Volcano Entertainment started using its own logo on a previous release using the Zoo Entertainment logo. In fact, the 1996 reissued with the Volcano logo may not have been really widely distributed until early 1997.
- The year 1999 is the year where Tool's Tool Dissectional label is used in conjunction with Volcano. Strong evidence supported the date of North American reissue on July 1, 1999, however, that Europe is unknown. In order to be careful, only the year is given for all releases like this.
- The year 2004 was the year Sony BMG was made. This retransmission contains works of art depicting Sony BMG as a distributor. Because Sony BMG's emphasis schedule is unknown, the actual release date may be around 2004 or 2005.
