A camera dolly is a wheeled cart or similar device used in film making and television production to create smooth horizontal camera movements. The camera is plugged into a dolly and the camera operator as well as the focus drag or camera assistant usually climb the dolly to push the doll back and forth. Dolly cameras are commonly used to produce images that involve moving the camera toward or away from the subject when shooting is being recorded, a technique known as "dolly shot." Grip dolly is a specialized technician trained to operate the dolly by pushing it back and forth manually.

Movement

The dolly camera can be used as a shooting platform on any surface but is often lifted onto a track, to create smooth motion on the horizontal axis known as the tracking shoot. In addition, most professional film studios have a hydraulic jib arm that raises or lowers the camera on the vertical axis. When the dolly grip operates dolly on the perpendicular axis simultaneously, it is known as compound movement.

The Dolly movement can also be done without a track, giving more freedom to the horizontal plane and with it, higher difficulty levels. This is called a dancefloor movement and can be performed on an existing surface (if fairly smooth) or on an overlay designed for dolly motion. The soil usually consists of thick plywood as the bottom layer and masonite above it.

Camera dollies have several steering mechanisms available for dolly handles. The common mode is the rear wheel steering, where the front wheels are fixed, while the wheels closest to the operating grip are used for spinning. The second mode, the steering wheel, causes the front wheel to rotate in the opposite direction from the rear wheel. This mode allows the puppets to move in a smooth circle and is often used when the doll is in a curved track. The third mode, called the steering crab, is when the front wheel is directed in the same direction as the rear wheel. This allows the dolls to move diagonally to the front end of the doll.

The Dolly Zoom is a combination of a doll inside or out with a simultaneous zoom, creating a disorientation effect.

Type

Studio dollie is large and stable and can display hydraulics. This is the first choice for studio, backlot and shooting location when using a professional camera. A dolly studio usually requires a special operator called a "dolly handle", and many are built for camera operators to board dolls with cameras.

The light dolly system is simpler, affordable and is best used with a lighter camera. The lightweight system is usually favored by independent filmmakers and students because they are easier to carry and operate. All of these dolls only support cameras, and operators need to move together. Some light dolls are small enough to carry in a backpack.

The best way to be able to replicate the same camera movement to take several times (which is important for editing) is to use dolly on the track.

Track

The Dolly track used for heavy cameras has traditionally been built from steel or aluminum. Steel, although heavier than aluminum, is cheaper and holds heavier usage. Longer track segments, while heavier to transport, allow the track to be placed more upright with less effort. Curved tracks are also available. The version of the plastic track has been used with a light dolly system. In the 2000s, flexible rubber tracks allow for faster settings and easier transportation for use with light cameras.
