The High Top is the British racehorse and horseman, best known for winning the classic 2000 Guineas in 1972. High Top was one of England's leading two-year-olds in 1971 when Success included defeat from the strong tin field of the Observer Gold Cup. After winning a test race in his first appearance in 1972, he led from the start to defeat Eberton's future winner Roberto on 2000 Guineas. His classic win was the first of the seventeen classic British winners driven by Willie Carson. The High Top never wins again but finishes a second in both Sussex Stakes and Prix Jacques le Marois. At the end of the year, he retired to study and became a very successful stallion.

The High Top, described as "the most distinguished individual", is a brown horse with white stars of four white socks raised by Bob McCreery at Moreton Paddox Stud in Warwickshire, England. He comes from a third plant of foals cherished by Derring-Do, a winning horse including Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 1965 and the other descendants including Leger Peleid winner and 2000 winner of Guineas Roland Gardens. Camenae high dam, won a small race, but was a successful broodmare, resulting in several other winners including the Jersey County winner Camden Town. As a descendant of Gentlemen's Relish young men, Camenae comes from the same 11-a Thoroughbred family branch that also produces German champions Acatenango and Prix du Jockey Club and Irish Derby winner Old Vic.

As a child, the High Top was sent to sales but failed to reach the reserve price. Soon he was bought for 9,000 guineas by Vienna-born industrialist Sir Jules Thorn. The boy was sent into training with Bernard Van Cutsem at home to Stanley House in Newmarket, Suffolk. At that time, Van Cutsem was one of the most successful trainers in the UK, addressing major winners including Park Top (King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes) and Karabas (Washington, D.C. International Stakes).

Racing career

1971: season two years

Racing as a two-year-old in 1972, the High Top won three out of four races. After winning his debut, High Top ran across Washington Singer Stakes in Newbury, where the second finish was from Yarsolav, a stallion to which he admitted three pounds. In his last appearance of the season, the horse was sent to Doncaster Racecourse for the Gold Cup One Observer Group and began a 11/2 dispute. Driven by Scottish jockey Willie Carson he won by three-quarters of the Steel Pulse, a stallion who later won the Irish Derby the following year. The horses that are not replaced include Boucher and Rheingold.

The High Top win at Doncaster was a tremendous season peak for Van Cutsem's two-year-old horses: he won the Dewhurst Bets with Crown Prince and Park Central Bets with Sharpen Up. In the Free Handicap, Britain's best two-year rank, Crown Prince was given the highest weight of 133 pounds, with High Top level with Yaroslav in second place with 131.

Record notes

High Top retired to study where he proved to be a very successful winner. Despite the fact that the High Top never runs more than a mile, many of their best-breeds are far superior: they include Classic English Cut Above and Circus Plume winners Irish Oaks Colorspin, Derby Italian My Top Winners and Prix du Jockey Club Winners, Top Ville. He is also the damsire Opera House, Kayf Tara, Roseate Tern, In the Groove and Classic Cliche. In 1993, thanks largely to the success of Opera House, the High Top was the leading ants in England and Ireland.

In early 1988, the High Top stood at Woodland Stud in Newmarket when he began suffering from thrombosis on his hind legs. After showing signs of recovery, he relapsed and euthanized the veterinarian's advice on March 9th.
