Histori
The Rover Company (the originator of the Land Rover marque) experimented with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4 project based on two wheels "Road Rover" was developed by Gordon Bashford. It was kept in 1958, and the idea was dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford began working on the new model.
In 1967, the first Range Rover prototype was built (number plate SYE 157F), with a classic Range Rover shape that can be seen, but with different front grille and headlights configurations. The Range Rover design was completed in 1969. Twenty-six Velar engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and registered with the YVB151H plate number up to YVB177H.
Though chassis is not there. 3, the vehicle YVB 153H is believed to be the first of the production line as a vehicle in color that is much needed for marketing. The Velar name comes from Italian "velare" which means veil or to cover. Range Rover development developers Geof Miller uses this name as a feed to register Range Rovers pre-production. The Velar Company is registered in London and produces 40 pre-production vehicles built between 1967 and 1970. Most of the Velar pre-production vehicles are accounted for and safeguarded in conservation.
Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, Musà © e du Louvre in Paris exhibited the Range Rover as "industrial design exemplary work".
In 1972, the British Trans-America Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse America from north-to-south, including traversing DariÃÆ' à © n Gap without a path. The specially modified Range Range used for this expedition is now on display in the UK Motorcycle Driver's Heritage collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Between 1974 and 1987, Land Rover vehicles were only sold in the United States through the gray market. The Land Rover Company began officially selling the Range Rover in the US on March 16, 1987. From then until 1993, US marketing was all on behalf of the Range Rover, as it was the only model offered in the American market. In 1993, with the arrival of Defender 110 and the arrival of Land Rover Discovery, US company sales were under the name "Land Rover North America".
In 2004, Land Rover launched another model under the Range Rover - Range Rover Sport brand, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform, but the new Range Rover Sport has the latest Range Rover platform.
In 2011, the Range Rover Evoque was launched.

First generation (1970-1996)
The first generation Range Rover was produced between 1970 and 1996. Only available in 2-door bodies until 1981, although before the 4-door model was produced by a specialist company.
Unlike other 4x4 like Jeep Wagoneer, the original Range Rover is not designed as a luxury type vehicle. Although certainly above the market compared to previous Land Rover models, the initial Range Rover has a pretty basic and utilitarian interior with vinyl chairs and plastic dashboards designed to be washed with hoses. Comfort features such as power steering, carpeted flooring, air conditioning, leather cloth/chairs, and interior wood trim are installed later.
Range Rover is a body-on-frame design with ladder box section type chassis, such as the contemporary Land Rovers Series. Range Rover uses coil springs as opposed to leaf springs, permanent four-wheel drive, and four-wheel disc brakes. Range Rover was originally supported by various Rover V8 engines and diesel engines.
Initially, the Range Rover was fitted with a version of the Buick V8 Rover engine that was lowered by 130 hp (97 kW). In 1984, the engine was fitted with a Lucas fuel injection, increasing power up to 155 hp (116 kW). The 3.5 liter engine (3.528Ã, cc) was bored for 3.9 liter (3.947Ã, cc) displacement for the 1990 model year, and 4.2 liter (4.215Ã, cc) in 1992 (1993 model year) for 108 -inch Long Wheelbase Vogue LSE (County LWB [long wheelbase] in North America). One of the first significant changes occurred in 1981, with the introduction of a four-door body. Shortly after twin thermo fan technology was introduced to reduce the significant overheating problems in the 1970s experienced in Australia. In 1988, the LR introduced a 2.4-liter turbodiesel (bad Vogue Turbo D) that arrived with 112 bph (84 kW), produced by VM Motori Italia. The same machine is also available on the Rover SD1 passenger car. The diesel project is named the Beaver project. During the project, 12 broken world records, including the fastest diesel SUV to reach 100 mph (160 km/h), and the farthest diesel SUV that has traveled in 24 hours. In 1990 the Otter project was inaugurated. It is a light, 119-bhp (89-kW) 2.5-liter version of 'Beaver' 2.4. In 1992, Land Rover finally introduced their own diesel engine in the Range Rover, starting with 111Ã, bhp (83Ã, kW) 200TDi, first released in Land Rover Discovery and following in 1994, 300 TDi, again with 111 b bhp.
Range Rover with chassis no. 1 is a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on display at Huddersfield Land Rover Center, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
The first-generation model was known as the Range Rover until almost the end of its journey, when Land Rover introduced the Range Rover Classic name to distinguish it from its successor.
Australian Assembly
Jaguar-Rover-Australia started assembling the Range Rover from CKD devices at the Enfield plant, in New South Wales, Australia in 1979. The government raised the spare parts tariffs causing the Australian assembly to be halted in 1983.
Utility vehicle
The first generation Range Rover serves as the basis for special utility vehicles. These include the Carmichaels International Six-Wheel Fire Cook. It is a two-door model with extended chassis and a third "lazy" axle added. Designed for the use of a small airfield, it has a water pump mounted on the front bumper that is driven directly by the V8 crankshaft. MoD buys them for RAF, this version is called TACR2. Carmichaels was contracted to supply a modified chassis and fire fighting bodies supplied and installed by Gloster-Saro. This is a four-door version using an internal water pump powered by a PTO gearbox. At least one of these (at Duxford IWM) has been converted into a full 6x6 by connecting the drive-through unit to two rear axle differentials. Second generation (1994-2002) Second generation >
After 25 years since the introduction of the first generation Range Rover, the second generation Range Rover - model-designation P38A - was introduced for the 1995 model, with the latest version of the Rover V8 engine. There is also the option of a 2.5-liter six-cylinder turbo diesel engine with Bosch injection pump. This is the first diesel injection with electronic controls in Land Rover, before the common rails are introduced. This is a result of BMW's subsequent ownership of the Rover Group and hence the Land Rover brand. The new model offers more equipment and premium trim, positioning vehicles on Land Rover Discovery to face increasing competition in the SUV market. This model was the last to show the Rover V8 and interior leather provided by Connolly who left the business in 2002. This is the first model that displays Satellite Navigation as an option.
Third generation (2002-2012)
In 2002, a third-generation model was introduced, which saw this model move further into the market. Planned and developed under the ownership of the third generation BMW is to share components and systems (electronic, core power units etc) with the BMW 7 Series (E38). It is designed to accommodate a 4.6 liter M62 V8 BMW engine for future models. Manual transmission is completely dropped, leaving only automatic. The Series 7 electronic system is being phased out during the development of the third generation Range Rover and is replaced with electronics from the BMW 5 Series (E39). Note that there are three "Generations" of L322, from 2002 to 2005 are the above mentioned BMW M62 M62 with ZF 5HP-24 transmission, went together until 2006 to 2009, the 4.4-liter Jaguar engine along with a 4.2 liter supercharged variant of Jag engines partnered with the ZF 6HP-26 transmission. In 2010 Land Rover features new 5.0 N/A and Supercharged engines designed with ZF 6HP-26 until the 2012 model year, which sees the end of L322 production. This list does not provide diesel options.
From 2002-2004 L322 saw the standard BMW E39 electric system. From 2005-2009 L322 saw the electric system coming from an updated Jaguar with fiber optics and Bluetooth. From 2010-2012, L322 saw an update (different from 05-09) of electricity coming from Jaguar, the first "modern feel" system.
On MY06, the first exterior update was applied with a front fascia front facelift, taillights. Some other minor differences can be found in the "Supercharged" variant. The second exterior update is in 2010, bringing true modern nuances to the L322 with new fascia, backlight, side toaster, and clear side markers.
The interior remains relatively the same as the exception of the black trim black trim Supercharged to 2006.5, (NAS 2007) where the updated interiors are brought. Other major changes occurred in 2010.
The fourth generation (2012-present)
The fourth generation Range Rover, codenamed L405, is on display in September 2012 at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
Hybrid
The Range Rover Hybrid is a diesel-powered hybrid electric model introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2013. The ordering process begins in September 2013, and retail shipments in Europe are scheduled to begin in early 2014.
Sales
The success of Jaguar Land Rover since its formation in 2008 is reflected in the rising sales of the Range Rover. In 2009, when a severe recession occurred, only over 22,000 were sold. Four years later, it sold more than twice as many units, with over 45,000 sold. By 2015, worldwide Range Rover sales exceed 60,000.
This table does not include Range Rover Sport and Evoque. Its total number from 2009, excluding those sold before that year.
Motorsport
Range Rover was used to win the Paris-Dakar Rally of 1979 and 1981, completing the race distance in each case of about 10,000 km. Range Rovers also competed in the East African Safari Rally throughout the 1980s.
Extending Path
Range Rover Sport
On 26 November 2004, Land Rover released the first photographs of the Range Rover Sport, a new model planned to be shown to the public for the first time at the 2004 North American International Exhibition. Range Rover Sport is the development of the Range Stormer concept vehicle produced by the company at The 2004 North American International Car Show. Although it is called the Range Rover Sport "L319", it is not just a new specification in the Range Rover range, but Discovery adapted "L320", or T5 Platform Discovery/LR3 with Range Rover exterior styling and interior seating Range Rover and dash shape, shorter wheelbase, smaller luggage capacity and a single, non-split tailgate that tilts backward for styling improvements. With model entry prices close to the top Discovery model, Sport becomes the biggest seller of all Land Rover products. The model was released for sale in late 2004 as a 2004 model.
In 2013 a redesigned version was released for sale as a model year 2014 "L494". Unlike the original Discovery and nowadays, it has no steel chassis rails but is based on the new D7u alloy Platform, which is much more resembling the current Range Rover with closer equipment levels and capability in smaller body styles. Therefore the L494 Sport Range Rover is about 400 kg lighter than previous generations and benefits in performance due to weight loss.
Range Rover Evoque
The Range Rover Evoque, which began production in July 2011, is rooted in the Land Rover LRX car concept; with which he has an almost identical resemblance. It is available with a three-door or five-door hatchback body, front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and with a 2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine or one of two different power outputs of a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine.
In 2012, at the Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover unveiled a convertible concept, featuring four seats and a drop-down truck tub.
Range Rover Velar
Land Rover launches mid-size crossover using the Range Rover name in March 2017. Named the Range Rover Velar, it has a rooftop line that runs on bodywork and uses the same platform as the Jaguar F-Pace, which serves as the base for its design.
Criticism
The Range Rover brand has attracted some controversy, especially from those concerned with the potential negative environmental impact of large luxury vehicles. In 2005, Greenpeace members temporarily interrupted the Range Rover production at the Land Rover plant in Solihull.
In 2004, Spen King criticized the owners of SUVs driving their vehicles in urban areas, saying that vehicles like the Range Rover he made "were never meant to be a status symbol, but then my design incarnation seemed intended for that purpose."
In 2014 it is reported that Range Rovers can be unlocked and start using handheld devices available from eBay. High theft rates make Range Rover uninsurable.
Range Rovers, according to AutoTrader, "can be complicated, expensive vehicles, and full of very expensive parts." The issue of reliability is a common complaint. The JD Power rating for Land Rover is in the lowest category - known as "The Rest" - for overall quality, reliability, sales satisfaction, and customer service, with cars earning only "Better Than Most" ratings in overall category performance and design. The Land Rover brand has "legacy quality issues" and ratings "at the bottom of J.D. The reliability rating of power for a three-year vehicle". The JD Power 2014 US Customer Performance Index (CSI) studied the latest Land Rover rankings in overall customer satisfaction. However, one Trend Motor review from Range Rover 2014 after 22,830 miles (36,741 km) appears only two things wrong with the car. According to an automotive journalist, "Land Rover is not concerned with JD Power ratings because it does not need to care" because people "are still marching for months to pay the full sticker."
