Axalta Coating Systems is a coating company headquartered in Philadelphia, PA that develops and manufactures coatings for light vehicles, commercial, industrial, and refinish applications. The company does business in 130 countries, has nearly 13,000 employees, and has more than 100,000 customers.
Axalta traces its origins to the German company Herberts Gmbh , which began in 1866 coat carriages before moving on to automotive paintings. Through the merger then the company became DuPont Performance Coatings (DPC), part of the American DuPont chemical empire, and renamed Axalta Coating Systems after being purchased by The Carlyle Group in 2013. Axalta went public on the New York Stock Exchange in November 2014 and has since become completely independent. Carlyle Group out of their last ownership ownership in Axalta in 2015.
The company is a sponsor of four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports No. 1 car. 24, a relationship dating back to the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series Gordon Cup in 1992. Axalta currently sponsors Alex Bowman in No. 1 car. 88 and William Byron in No. car. 24.

The company's first product was developed in Germany in 1866 to protect the carriages from gravel on dirt roads. In 1920, the company created a fast-color and multi-color lacquer lane for automotive painting. Operating as Herberts Gmbh , the company grew up under Kurt Herberts, introducing the popular car finished Standox in 1955.
In 1999 Herberts merged with DuPont Automotive Finishes, a transport layer systems technology company that started in 1922 in Wilmington, Delaware, to form the DPC. In 2012, private equity firm The Carlyle Group announced plans to buy and stop the DPC. The Carlyle Group completed the sale in February 2013 and established Axalta. On November 12, 2014, the company completed its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: AXTA).
On January 21, 2015, Axalta and China's industrial coatings company, Shanghai Kinlita Chemical formed a partnership to operate in China. In April 2015, Berkshire Hathaway invested $ 560 million in Axalta Coating Systems. In July 2016, the company acquired automotive interior coating business United Paint and Chemical Corp.
The company currently operates in North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Activities for Europe, Middle East, and Africa region (EMEA) are based in Basel, Switzerland. Among the oldest products of Axalta are Standox and Spies Hecker. Cromax, water-based products, and industrial paints Nap-Gard, a powder coating for oil and gas pipelines, and Voltatex for electrical insulation, were introduced in the 1990s. Other products made by Axalta include Abcite, Alesta, AquaEC, Audurra, Centari, Challenger, Harmonized Coating Technologies, Imron, and Nason.

Axalta currently sponsors No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 from Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers Alex Bowman and No. 24 Camaro from William Byron. Previously, the company sponsored four-time runner-up series Jeff Gordon Number 24 cars, a relationship that dates back to Axalta's days as DuPont and Gordon's first Cup match in 1992. In 2016 Brickyard 400, Gordon has won three times in Axalta - a Car that sponsored, all in 2014. During Gordon's career, he runs a variety of Axalta schemes to promote his brand like Cromax and Standox. On February 12, 2015, Gordon was employed by Axalta as a global business advisor.
