In the medical world, Formation is a sensation that resembles a small insect that crawls (or beneath) the skin. This is one specific form of a series of sensations known as paresthesia, which also includes a more common piercing sensation known as "pins and needles". Formation is a well-documented symptom, which has many possible causes. This word comes from formica , the Latin word for ants.

Formation can sometimes be experienced as a feeling of itching, tingling, tingling, burning, or even pain. When formation is considered itchy, it can trigger early reflexes, and because of this, some people who experience sensations are at risk of causing skin damage through excessive scratches.

In some cases, static electricity can attract particulates to the skin and can also cause body hair to move, giving sensations like insects crawling over the skin. However, in many cases there are no external triggers that create a sensation.

In rare cases, individuals become convinced that the sensation is caused by the presence of real insects in or under the skin. In this case, the patient has what is known as delusional parasitosis. They believe that their skin is inhabited by, or attacked by, small insects or parasites similar, despite repeated guarantees from doctors, pest control experts, and entomologists.

Cause

The causes of formation include normal circumstances such as the onset of menopause (ie hormone withdrawal). Other causes are medical conditions such as pesticide exposure, mercury poisoning, diabetic neuropathy, skin cancer, syphilis, Lyme disease or herpes zoster (shingles). The formation may be the result of stimulant intoxication (eg methamphetamine, cocaine) or alcoholic alcohol withdrawal (ie delirium tremens), and often accompanied by visual hallucinations of insects (formicanopia). It may also occur as a symptom of withdrawal of benzodiazepines, withdrawal from drugs such as SSRI/SNRI and Tramadol antidepressants; and as a side effect of opioid analgesics.

History

The formation is etymologically derived from the Latin formica , which means "ant", precisely because of the similarity in sensation with the crawling insects. This term has been used for several hundred years. In the 1797 EncyclopÃÆ'Â|dia Britannica edition, the description of raphania's condition includes symptoms:

... formations, or sensations like ants or other small insects crawling in parts of it.

Explained again in the instruction text of 1890:

Various itching, often found in elderly eczema, is a formation; This is described as exactly like crawling myriads of animals on the skin. This may be due to irritation of the nerve fibers in the skin. Sometimes patients who have it will be hard to believe that it is not because of insects. Produce the temptation to scratch always makes the disease worse.
