The iron hand is a metal prosthesis for the hands and upper extremities of the medieval and early modern periods. This design combines cosmetic and functional properties. The most famous example of an iron fist was made around 1530, becoming the second prosthetic hand made for the German knight G̮'̦tz von Berlichingen.
Most of the iron fist is based on the same constructive principles, although there are many differences in complexity. Fingers can be flexed passively (eg using healthy hands) and locked in place with ratchet mechanisms, similar to contemporary flintlocks. Extension of radius works with spring pressure.
