The Mercedes-Benz W221 is a S-Class chassis code, the successor to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) and its predecessor the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222). The S-Class is the main vehicle of Mercedes-Benz and each generation typically introduces various technical innovations and developments that over time will find their way into smaller cars.

The vehicle was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2005.

Styling

The exterior style of the W221 S-Class is distinctly different from the W220. The W220 is somewhat broken with tradition being smaller than its predecessor W140, while the W221 is once again larger in all dimensions than its predecessor, offering more interior space and has improved performance. The W221 display is often said to be more impressive than the W220. The back style is similar to the Mercedes-Benz Maybach - a larger sedan from other leading Daimler AG brands, presented publicly in 1997. Development began in 1999, with design work commencing in 2000 at the Advanced Design Center in Tokyo. , and the final design by Gorden Wagener at the Sindelfingen Advanced Design Center approved in 2001, was frozen for production in early 2002 and patented in Japan on May 21, 2003 under 1208488 and in Germany on December 4, 2003. The final design prototype W221 is presented in December 2002 to journalist Autospies at the consumer design clinic, 2.5 years before the official production model that opened in June 2005.

Inside, the W221's interior also differs significantly from the previous model, even more dominated by leather, wood and metal. Where the W220 still has enough fascia and plastic switches, the W221 has been replaced mostly by more luxurious materials such as wood, leather and metal. The interior is equipped with a cluster instrument with two large flat-panel displays, one for a hard disk-based COMAND system that includes a navigation screen and one replaces the analog speedometer with its graphical representation, which can display additional information and can also be replaced with a Night View Assist view. Below the center COMAND screen is a silver air vents effect, and a square, analog clock in the vents. Under the vent is a metal tab switch with a black field behind it, to control the HVAC system (all of these functions can also be accessed through the COMAND system, which also offers access to some additional HVAC functions, such as good-temperature temperature control and air flow control ).

Below the HVAC button section is an open panel to provide access to a DVD changer which also includes a CompactFlash card reader. In the center console, the metal control wheel for the COMAND system is on a piece of wood, surrounded by metal buttons. There is no longer a central gear lever as in the previous model, otherwise the handle on the steering wheel controls the gearbox (with a button or, optionally, paddle on the steering wheel for manual gear control). The controls mounted on the door panels provide access to the main seat controls (including optional seat heaters, ventilation and seat memory) and to the electric mirrors, windows and openings for boot and closure. Additional seat controls are accessed through standard COMAND systems (this includes controlling the optional multi-contour and dynamic contour seats and massage chair functions). Across the interior, many buttons are metal-shaped, with a black field on top of it showing the switch function.

The steering wheel has various control buttons for cluster display, volume and phone control and for optional Linguatronic sound control system. In an electrically adjustable steering wheel column, gearbox control levers are also installed, the handle to control the speed and cruise control functions, the main combination lever operating the indicator, high beam and windshield wiper and handle to adjust the steering wheel and the optional heated steering wheel. Controls for interior lighting and beautiful sun or roof roofs are installed on the roof, near the interior rearview mirror. This section also includes a compartment for sun glasses.

The W221 is slightly larger in all dimensions than the W220, with longer wheelbases and more interior space.

S-Class is available in the form of a short wheelbase, except in the US, Mexico, Russia, China and Indonesia, where all models are long wheelbase.

Features

As for all other S-Class generations, the W221 introduces an improved raft of features and new systems. The standard COMAND now also controls more features and/or provides access to additional settings for various functions, including HVAC systems and seat controls.

Security

  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP): standard on the S-Class since the W220 model and similar to the system installed on other Mercedes vehicles, this system measures the driver input and compares it with the vehicle path. If this diverges, ESP braked the single wheel selectively to remove oversteer (fishtailing) and understeer (hijack), and reduce engine power, if necessary. ESP includes anti-lock braking (ABS) and traction control (ASR) in its wider function.
  • Brake Assist and (for vehicles with optional Distronic Plus system) Brake Assist Plus: systems that recognize emergency braking and increase braking power (according to Mercedes-Benz 90% of drivers are too hesitant with brakes in case of emergency). Brake Assist Plus uses radar to divide brake pressure based on sensor data and measure the distance between car and vehicle or other object in front.
  • Speedtronic's customizable speed limiters not to exceed speeds set on roads with speed limits.
  • Advanced radar Plus cruise control controls (optional, standard cruise control on other cars), Distronic system evolution introduced on the W220, which keeps a safe distance to the previous vehicle and can now take the car to the full stop if necessary.
  • Pre-Safe and Pre-Safe Plus for vehicles with Distronic Plus: Pre-Safe system development previously installed to the W220 S-Class, which uses vehicle-dynamic sensors to predict collisions and trigger precautions to protect occupants of vehicles, system Pre-Safe Plus W221 also takes into account account closure speed, as measured by vehicle radar. If a possible collision appears, Pre-Secure closes all windows and sunroof, moves all passenger seats and holds their heads to a safer position, and tightens the seatbelt. It also expands the air space on the side of the optional multi-contour roll chair and (from 2006) involves Pre-Safe Brakes to reduce speed and therefore impact weight.
  • Bi-Xenon headlamp with Active Lights The curve light function
  • Night View Assist: optionally, using two near-infrared illuminators (NIRs) mounted on the headlamp cluster and the camera on the windshield. The infrared light is photographed by the camera and an image is displayed in the instrument group. Mercedes-Benz claims that this system provides the same visibility as high beam lights, without blinding the riders to come.
  • Adaptive Brake Light
  • Automatically dim the rearview mirror and driver's door mirror
  • Pre-tension safety belts, belt bending limits and auto-belt height adjustments, front and back

Development to further refine the W221 began in 2006 with design changes approved in early 2007. The revised S-Class 2010 was announced on April 8, 2009 in Stuttgart. Minor model updates include minor cosmetic changes and some new features:

  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist - detects vehicles with their ongoing headlights to or in front of the car where the system is installed and controls the headlights to ensure the greatest reach without blinding other drivers.
  • Blind Spot Assist - a warning indicator in the side mirror will be active if the vehicle is detected in the blind spot.
  • Lane Keeping Assist - detects road marks and feelings if the driver accidentally gets off the track. If so, the driver is warned by a short steering tremor. The system can also distinguish between deliberate (eg, overtaking or merging) and accidental path aberrations, reducing the number of false alarms.
  • Speed Limit Help - identifies the signs of the speed limit that passes and shows the relevant speed limit on the center screen. It's standard for S 600.
  • Attention Assist - continuously monitors more than 70 different parameters to detect driver fatigue and fatigue. Once the system detects behaviors that typically indicate sleepiness, alert alerts are sounded and "ASSIST ATTENTION. Break!" appears in the instrument cluster. This is not standard on S 400 HYBRID.
  • Active Body Control (ABC) cross-stabilization - using sensors from the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) to vary the distribution of wheel loads through the ABC spring struts, depending on the direction and intensity of the crosswind, to reduce the side effects of crosswinds. It's standard on S 600.
  • Torque Vectoring Brake - brakes the inner rear wheels during cornering to improve handling and safety by reducing understeer.
  • PRE-SAFE Brake enhancement now activates maximum braking pressure of about 0.6 seconds before what is recognized as an unavoidable collision.
  • Night View Assist Plus with pedestrian introduction
  • COMAND with dual view SPLITVIEW view.
  • COMAND APS navigation system replaces the DVD with a 40 gigabyte hard disk drive map.
  • Direct Directors

Tools

  • standard AIRMATIC air suspension with continuous Adaptive Damping System Plus (not for S600 and AMG)
  • Active Body Control Suspension (optional, only on rear wheel drive)
