The Mercedes-Benz W221 is a S-Class chassis code, the successor to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) and its predecessor the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222). The S-Class is the main vehicle of Mercedes-Benz and each generation typically introduces various technical innovations and developments that over time will find their way into smaller cars.

Styling
The exterior style of the W221 S-Class is distinctly different from the W220. The W220 is somewhat broken with tradition being smaller than its predecessor W140, while the W221 is once again larger in all dimensions than its predecessor, offering more interior space and has improved performance. The W221 display is often said to be more impressive than the W220. The steering wheel has various control buttons for cluster display, volume and phone control and for optional Linguatronic sound control system. In an electrically adjustable steering wheel column, gearbox control levers are also installed, the handle to control the speed and cruise control functions, the main combination lever operating the indicator, high beam and windshield wiper and handle to adjust the steering wheel and the optional heated steering wheel. The W221 is slightly larger in all dimensions than the W220, with longer wheelbases and more interior space.
S-Class is available in the form of a short wheelbase, except in the US, Mexico, Russia, China and Indonesia, where all models are long wheelbase.

Features
As for all other S-Class generations, the W221 introduces an improved raft of features and new systems. The standard COMAND now also controls more features and/or provides access to additional settings for various functions, including HVAC systems and seat controls.
Security

Development to further refine the W221 began in 2006 with design changes approved in early 2007. The revised S-Class 2010 was announced on April 8, 2009 in Stuttgart. Minor model updates include minor cosmetic changes and some new features:

S280 and S300L (2006-2013)
