History

The University was founded in 1900 as the American College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. The school is the fourth medical school in the world to award the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), and the first in the state of Illinois.

In 1986, the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine moved from its previous location in Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois to a new campus in the western suburb of Downers Grove, Illinois. In 1991, the Chicago College of Pharmacy opened. The College of Health Sciences began in 1992. In 1993, the Supervisory Board unanimously approved an educational mission for the institution, uniting the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chicago College of Pharmacy, and the Chicago College of Health Sciences to Midwestern University..

In 1996, the university opened a new campus in Glendale, Arizona. The first college on the Glendale campus was the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, which began its first program in 1996. Academics and accreditation

Through eleven colleges, Midwestern University offers 17 academic programs in two locations. All courses are graduate level, and focus on the health profession. Downers Grove, Illinois

The Downers Grove campus is located on a 65-hectare site in Downers Grove, Illinois, a suburb, 25 miles west of downtown Chicago. The campus includes green spaces, forested areas, and nature trails, alongside classrooms, laboratories, libraries, auditoriums, and recreational facilities. The Science Hall is a 239,000 square foot building consisting of classrooms, more than 100 offices, and 25 laboratories. The Science Hall opened in 2011, and includes a dirty anatomy laboratory, research laboratory, and clinical simulation laboratory for dental schools. Student housing is provided in three different facilities: Redwood Hall I, Redwood Hall II, and Pines Apartments. The Traditional Residence Halls (consisting of five connected dorms: Aspen Hall, Birch Hall, Chestnut Hall, Dogwood Hall and Elm Hall) were destroyed in 2015. The Downers Grove campus is home to over 2,500 students and five colleges, offering two the twelve fields of learning.

Glendale, Arizona
