The pendant light , sometimes called a drop or suspender, is a single light hanging from a ceiling normally hung by a string, chain, or metal rod. Pendant lamps are often used in recent times, hung in a straight line on a kitchen table and dining table set or sometimes in the bathroom. Pendants come in a variety of large sizes and various materials from metal to glass or concrete and plastic. Many modern pendants are low voltage models of energy saving and some use halogen or fluorescent lamps.

The billiard or island lights are longer pendant fixtures, usually with fluorescent lamps or long incandescent lamps, used over kitchen islands and pool tables. They are sometimes considered a type of chandelier.

It is a key component to understanding architectural lighting design and is sometimes associated with interior design.

Size rules

Since the pendant light is usually smaller and placed on the set, it is important to follow general lighting rules to avoid creating poor lighting. Oddly the number of pendants is preferred over even number. Typically, an equivalent lamp of 60-75 watts is required for every 20 inches of counter space. Regarding the altitude, the locket should be placed high enough to allow unimpeded views while sitting or standing. Pendents should be placed 28-38 inches above the counter top, or 72 inches above the floor.
