History
The earliest pedal-powered Quadracycle was recorded in 1853 at the All Nations World Exhibition Industry Exhibition held in New York City. This is the same time that two-wheeled bikes are starting to become popular. Quadracycles is one solution to the problem of low speed stability in the early cycle and is usually a multi-seat model. A tandem seating configuration (in line) and sociable (side-by-side) are used.
One of the early designs, ahead of 1869 was the Andrews Quadracycle , built by Andrews of Dublin, Ireland. Made of iron one square inch and pushed with a foot lever that moves in a long horizontal ellipse. The Sawyer Quadricycle was introduced in 1855 and featured lighter construction, wooden wheels, iron tires and front wheel steering through tillers. Like the Andrews Quadracycle it is driven by a lever leg that moves the rear axle. Starley's
In the early twentieth century, Massey-Harris in Canada developed the Canadian Royal Mail Quadracycle . It was used for mail delivery in Toronto as early as 1901. The Gendron Wheel Company made replicas of children's toys until World War II.
Quadracycles modern
The use of quadracycles was reduced in the late 19th century as a result of improvements in bicycle technology that made their four-wheeled cousins ââlargely out of use, although small numbers were made in 1950 for use in tourist areas.
The revival of twentieth-century quadracycle use took place in France where Charles Mochet introduced his Velocar-powered two-seat quadracycle pedal in 1924. Various models of Velocar feature wooden aerodynamic bodies and usually three-speed transmissions. Production of the Velocar Model H-final H-pedal powered vehicle ended in 1938, but Mochet later became a car manufacturer. Velocar proved quite popular, especially during World War II when the French population was under German occupation and gasoline was virtually unavailable for civilian use. Retrieved Mochet Velocars are still found in France.
During the 1970s and 1980s, there was a resurgence of interest in quadracycles as private transportation, fueled by the 1973 oil crisis, environmental concerns about air pollution from cars and the search for emission-free alternatives.
Modern quadracycles can generally be placed in six categories:
Travel destination rentals â ⬠<â â¬
Quadracycles can often be found in tourist attractions where they are available for rent by the hour or day. Modern touristy quadracycles usually feature open seating for two or more riders in a friendly configuration. They are often designed to look like early twentieth-century cars with bench seats, rack-and-pinion steering, and an upper canopy. They are commonly called "surrey", because of their resemblance to the horse-drawn carts with similar looks and the same name.
Examples of this type include:
- Surrey International Surrey Company
- Quadricycle International Quad-3
- Rhoades Car 4W4P
- Sirenetta âââ â¬
Pedal taxi
Similar to the surrey is a pedal or pedicab taxi. These tend to be four or even six seaters and are used as taxis, powered by professional drivers. As surreys rent, they are often found in tourist attractions and in downtown areas of tourist destination cities.
Also like surreys rentals, pedal taxis are often built to resemble early 20th century cars and often feature a tent cover for protection from the sun.
Examples of this type include:
- Surrey International Limousine
- Momentum Quadracycles MQ4 Cabbie
- Quadracycle Inc. QuadraCab
- Delphino (Limo)
Tour
Touring quadracycles is built exclusively for private proprietary markets and is built to make it lighter and faster than surreys lease. Typically, they sit one or two people in adjacent seats and feature independent pedaling and tooth selection. They can have up to 192 teeth, giving them an extraordinary climbing ability. They are used for long distance travel as well as local use; some are used for cycle-cycle to work.
Compared to cycling or hybrid bicycles, the quadracycles tour is more convenient to drive, can navigate the steeper hills more easily, deal with better crosswinds, and can carry loads much heavier than a bike. They have disadvantages compared to bikes including that they are heavier, require more storage space, usually have slower cruising speed, are more complex to maintain, and have larger turning circles. Unlike bicycles (but like rickshaws) they are vulnerable to tumbling in quick bends, and very low center of gravity and/or weight transfer by riders to the inside of the curve is needed to avoid this.
Examples of these types of vehicles include:
- LightLoot MicroCar
- Momentum Quadracycles MQ2 Convenience
- 2Rider Pacific Circle
- Quadracycle International Little Deuce Coupe Quadracycle Inc QuadraSport two seats
- QuattroVelo - high-speed "class" velomobile
- Car Rhoades 4W2PCP coupe two passengers
- RJK Ecology Cars
- Stepa by Steppe Quike
- Quadracycle Ultimate CC-Sportster
- Utah Trikes Quad
There are also plans available as well as some quadracycles of amateur designed tours made by combining two bikes. They have varying degrees of success.
Examples of plans that built quadracycles are:
- Skeldon Bike Co. Grandma's bicycle
- Atomic Zombie StreetFighter
Quadracycles mountains
Some quadracycles are designed to be four-wheeled bicycle mounts and optimized for strength and ability to encounter steep and rugged terrain; these are all single seat designs.
Examples of this type are:
- Crank-It Mountain Quad
Industrial use
There are quadracycles designed for the delivery of local goods, such as spare parts in the factory or laundry environment in the hotel complex scattered. They may have two seats and a pickup box or flat bed to allow the cargo to be transported. The use of quadracycles industry is also able to attract small trailers.
Some quadracycles in this category have also been designed for military applications, such as light transportation logistics.
Examples of this type of quadracycle include:
- Quadracycles Momentum MQ1 Industrial
- Rhoades Car 4W2PLF
- Rhoades Car Go Boy
Racing
Car Racing pedals can be found in many parts of the world. England, France and Italy all have championships and England and Hong Kong have a 24-hour race every year. The pedal race car is a lightweight engine built for the sole purpose of the race and is therefore not suitable for road use.
Performance art
The El Arbol Quadracycle is built as a portable stage and sound system to make a point about using fossil fuels for transportation.
Security
Due to the lack of mobs and car door locks, quadracycles are often secured in the same way as bikes with "U" or "D" keys, chains or cables for comfortable obese objects such as fence posts, signs or bike racks.
