Machine and transmission

Security

The C30 continues Volvo's marketing strategy to put safety as its primary concern (IntelliSafe). This is demonstrated through several security features developed recently, including a method of overcoming the "blind spot" in the driver's view backward through a system known as BLIS (Blind Spot Information System).

The C30 also features a four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), an electronic stability program (ESP), a traction control system and front, side and curtain airbags, front and rear crumple zones, and rigid residue cells.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded Volvo C30 for their Safety of Choice. The C30 is given the highest "good" rating on the front, side, rear and roof strength tests and has Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment to receive awards.

The Volvo C30 has a patented front and rear structure using four different steel grades to absorb and distribute impact energy around the body of the coupe. Volvo Whiplash Protection System and Side Impact Protection System with side airbags and blinds are also standard. The seat belt has a pretensioner to protect passengers from unexpected accidents.

The car also uses the Volvo Driver Driver Information System (IDIS) which continuously monitors the preemptive systems of the car such as steering angles, pedal pressure, and overall factors that help vehicle computers to decide whether drivers are busy or disrupted merging or reversing, and then will delay data or warnings certain not important.

The C30 has been criticized because in an attempt to make it more responsive in the curve it becomes less reliable on ice or snow where the rear can more easily lose its grip compared to other Volvo models.

Marketing

As part of the launch of the C30 Europe, a series of 16 different television commercials were created by Fuel London (part of Euro RSCG Worldwide) under the campaign theme, "A Product of Free Will."

As part of the launch of the US C30, the Volvo C30 configuration site displays fluctuating price quotes for identical vehicles. Volvo's intention is to determine what potential buyers are willing to pay and how many vehicles they need to send to America.

C30 DRIVe Electric (2011-2013)

The prototype C30 electric car uses an 82 kW electric motor, and has a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery mounted in a propshaft tunnel and in a space normally occupied by a fuel tank, outside the passenger compartment and away from the deformation zone. Electricity C30 delivers up to 150 km (93 mi) under the NEDC cycle.

A moveable C30 prototype was presented in September 2009. The updated prototype (with complete interiors and full instrumentation, and enhanced battery packs) was launched in 2010 at the North American International Auto Show.

C30 DRIVe Electric concept car exhibited at the Paris Motor Show 2010 and displayed as DRIVe C30.

Field tests of about 50 C30 electric cars were made in Sweden from the fourth quarter of 2010, mainly internally at Volvo Car Corporation. Volvo C30 Electric is also part of the One Tonne Life project where a family is given the task of living as a clever climate for six months. In July 2012, Volvo delivered 15 Volvo C30 electric cars as part of an open-air test project in Shanghai.

The C30 electric has a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is supplied by the US factory EnerDel. Electric motors, motor controllers, chargers and other drivetrain components are supplied by Swiss manufacturer BRUSA Electronics AG. The highest speed is estimated by Volvo at 130 km/h (81 mph), with acceleration from 0-50 kph (0-31 mph) in 4 seconds. The C30 Electric can be recharged from a regular home electrical outlet and the full charge takes about 7 hours. The electric range is all up to 150 kilometers (93 mi). The battery is installed where the fuel tank is usually seated and also in a special compartment at the C30 central tunnel, and as a result, the trunk compartment has not changed. In August 2012, Volvo ordered the second supply of battery packs from EnerDel to build an internal test fleet together with Siemens.

Volvo C30 Electric is equipped with three climate systems: one supplying passengers with heating or cooling; one cools or warms the battery as needed; and electric motors and water-cooled power electronics. The climate control in the passenger cabin is equipped with bioethanol powered heater, a solution chosen by Volvo to get warmed up without sacrificing the battery driving range, but the driver has the option to run the climate unit on electricity from the battery. Ethanol is the standard mode and the ethanol tank can carry 14.5 liters (3.8 gallon US) of bioethanol. Volvo has been testing the C30 in winter conditions at temperatures as low as -20 ° C (-4 ° F).

The concept of Range Extenders (2011)

The Volvo C30 with Range Extenders connected series is based on the C30 Electric with a three-cylinder combustion engine that produces 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp) mounted under the rear load compartment floor. The car also has a 40 liter fuel tank. The combustion engine is connected to a 40 kW generator. Combined power is used to drive 111 PS (82 kW 109 hp) electric motor, but the driver can also choose to let the generator charge the battery, thereby increasing the range of electric car operation. This Range Extender increases the range of electric cars up to 1,000 km - above the 110 km range provided by car batteries.

Volvo C30 with parallel-connected Range Extender includes a turbocharged three-cylinder combustion engine with a 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) rating on the rear and a 40-liter fuel tank, six-speed automatic transmission. 40 kW battery generator can also be charged to provide increased range of cars on electricity alone. The electric motor is the same as the Range Extender car connected series. The combined power is rated 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp). Range Extender increases the range of electric cars up to 1,000 km - above the 75 km range provided by car batteries.

Fuel cell production begins in 2010.

Production

The Volvo C30 Electric body is built on a regular assembly line at the plant in Ghent, Belgium, and then the glider is transported to Gothenburg for installation of motors, batteries and other model-specific electronic devices.

As a low-production car, Volvo intends to lease Volvo C30 Electric to corporate customers, especially corporations, authorities, and government agencies. Initial deliveries are scheduled for the third quarter of 2011 across Europe, including in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway. Volvo plans to build about 250 cars by the end of 2012, and possibly more if market interest increases. Volvo also plans to allocate a total of 100 Volvo C30 Electrics to the US, half of which will be on the West Coast and the other half on the East Coast. Volvo targets leasing to corporate and government fleet users at prices around US $ 2,100 per month in the US and EUR1,500 per month in Europe with a three-year lease. Because this price is much higher than other electric cars available on the market in 2011, Volvo explained that their prices reflect the true cost of limited production cars. During 2011, 6 units are registered in France. A total of 126 units have been leased in Sweden until September 2012 since 2011. On July 5, 2013, the C30 is no longer available for ordering from Volvo, nor appears in the queuing model on the Volvo Cars website. The last C30 of the current stock will be registered by the end of 2013, but nothing is produced after July 2013.

The C30 Electric production began in June 2011. The delivery of the first ten C30 Electric was made to energy company GÃÆ'¶teborg Energy with deliveries beginning in the autumn of 2010. Leasing to fleet customers in Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands and Norway began in the third quarter of 2011. As much as 209 units have been leased in Europe until October 2012, Sweden is the top selling market with 149 units shipped from 2011 to March 2013.

Production stops in December 2012 and the C30 range is discontinued in 2013.
