Craft or trade is a hobby or profession that requires skill and specialized knowledge of skilled work. In the historical sense, especially the Middle Ages and earlier, this term is usually applied to people who are busy in the production of small-scale goods, or their maintenance, for example by thinkers. The traditional terms craftsmen and craftsmen are now often replaced by artisans and rarely by craftsmen (artisans).

Historically, more specialized crafts with high value products tend to concentrate in downtown and form guilds. The skills required by their profession and the need to engage permanently in the exchange of goods often require generally higher levels of education, and artisans usually in a more privileged position than the peasants in the social hierarchy. Household craftsmen are not self-sufficient as are people involved in agricultural work and therefore have to rely on exchange of goods. Some crafts, especially in areas such as pottery, carpentry, and various stages of textile production, can be practiced on a part-time basis by those who also work in agriculture, and are often part of village life.

Once an apprentice completes his apprenticeship, he will become a traveler looking for a place to set up his own shop and earn a living. After he sets up his own shop, he can then call himself a master of his skills.

The gradual approach system for crafting mastery, which includes the acquisition of a number of educational and skill-learning, has persisted in several countries in the world today. But crafts have undergone profound structural changes during and since the end of the Industrial Revolution. Mass production of goods by large-scale industries has limited craft to market segments where industrial mode works or mass-produced goods will not or can not meet the preferences of potential buyers. Moreover, as a result of this change, today's craftsmen increasingly use components or semi-finished materials and adapt them to the needs or demands of their customers and, if necessary, to their customer's environment. Thus, they participate in a certain division of labor between industry and craft.

Classification

There are three aspects of human creativity - Arts, Crafts, and Science. Roughly defined, art relies on intuitive sensing, vision and expression, craft on advanced techniques and science.

Handicraft

Crafts are the main "traditional" sectors of crafts, this is the kind of work where useful and decorative devices are made entirely by hand or simply using a simple tool. Usually the term is applied to the traditional way of making things. Individual artistic items are the most important criteria, they often have cultural and/or religious significance. Goods made by mass production or machines not handicrafts. Handicraft items are made with craft production process.

The beginnings of crafts in areas such as the Ottoman Empire involve government agencies that require city members who are skilled at making goods to open stores downtown. These people slowly stop acting as subsistence farmers (who create goods in their own homes to trade with neighbors) and start representing what we think of "craftsmen" today.

In recent years, crafts and craftsmen are slowly gaining momentum as the subject of academic study. Stephanie Bunn was an artist before she became an anthropologist, and she went on to develop an academic interest in the craft process - arguing that what happened to an object before becoming a 'product' was a field worth studying.

Arts and Crafts Movement

The term crafts is often used to describe the family of artistic practices in family decorative arts that are traditionally defined by their relationship to functional or utilitarian products (such as sculptures in the ship's tradition) or by their use of natural media such as wood, soil clay, ceramic, glass, textile, and metal.

Craft studio

Handicrafts that are practiced by independent artists who work alone or in small groups are often referred to as studio crafts . Studio crafts include studio pottery, metal work, weaving, spinning wood, paper and other wooden forms of work, glass blowing, and glass art.

Craft exhibition

Craft exhibitions are events organized to showcase and sell handicrafts. There are craft shops where these items are sold and craft communities, such as Craftster, where craftsmanship is shared.

Tradesperson

A merchant is a skilled manual worker in a particular trade or craft. Economically and socially, the status of traders is considered between laborers and professionals, with a high level of practical and theoretical knowledge of their trade. In a culture where professional careers are greatly appreciated, there may be a shortage of skilled manual workers, leading to a profitable niche market in commerce.
