East Village is an environment in San Diego, California, United States. It is the largest urban neighborhood in downtown San Diego. Located east of the Gaslamp Quarter and southeast of the Core and Cortez Hill districts in downtown San Diego. East Village covers 130 blocks between Seventh Avenue east to 18th Street. The burgeoning urban enclave is home to over 700 businesses including restaurants, hotels and art galleries.
The East Village Business Improvement District is managed by the East Village Association, Inc. (EVA), a non-profit 501 (c) (3) company.

Histori
San Diego East Village is traditionally a series of warehouses and vacant lots. New in the 1990s became an artist community and social services. The settlement aspect of the East Village came true in 2005, after Petco Park was founded in 2004.
The Eastern Village community now has a population of 10,000 (and growing), with most residents living in the middle or condos and lavish loft. Continuing urban development and steady new business growth attracts locals from adjacent downtown areas.

Urban update
In the later part of the 20th century, the East Village is known for its empty buildings, bars, and artists' eclectic dwellings. Prostitutes, drug addicts, and homeless people are common. Beginning with the rebuilding, and especially after the opening of Petco Park in 2004, the area became famous for its upscale restaurants and trendy shops, though still full of homeless people. The neighborhood is now a construction hub including condominium projects and other public spaces, including a newly completed Central Library. The $ 185 million project, designed by architect Rob Quigley, officially opened on September 30, 2013.
