The Hyundai Elantra (Korean: ????? ), or Hyundai Avante (???? ) in South Korea, is a compact car manufactured by South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. Now in the sixth generation.
Elantra was originally marketed as Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this is due to the same Mitsubishi Magna Elante model. This led to disagreement with other motor manufacturers, and the name was standardized as "Elantra" around the world in 2001 (except in Korea).

Generasi pertama (J1; 1991-1995)
Launched in October 1990, Elantra (codename J1 ) received a mid-year facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced somewhat larger outside Stellar, although the model has not been offered in many markets. Elantra competes with the likes of Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a much lower price.
Elantra is powered by Mitsubishi-designed 1.6Ã, L (1596Ã, cc) straight-four. The 16-valve 1.6à £ DOHC unit, this L produces 113 hp (84 kW) at 6000 rpm and can drive Elantra up to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter mile (0.4 km) walk takes 17.1 seconds and produces 80 mph (129 km/h). The top speed is 116 mph (187 km/h). Elantra gets 22 mpg -US (11Ã, L/100Ã, km) in the city cycle. Beginning in 1993, there is an inline-four option 1.800 L designed by Mitsubishi (1836 cc); this unit produces 124 hp (99 kW) at 6000 rpm.

Second generation (J2/RD; 1996-2000)
Launched in 1995, the second generation (codename RD or J2 ) is offered as a sedan and station wagon. It is sold in the South Korean market as "Hyundai Avante" in the form of sedan and "Avante Touring" in the body style of the cart. Some export markets such as Australia and Europe receive the series as "Lantra Hyundai" according to the first generation. The Australian market wagon is titled "Lantra Sportswagon". Between 1996 and 1998, Elantra was marketed as "Bimantara Nenggala" (1.6 liter petrol) in Indonesia.
In Europe, from 1996 to 1997 the sedan model had brought a silver-mercury fake grille, while the carts did not carry the front grille.
At launch, the SO-SO 1.5 liter (61 kW or 82 hp) inline-four and 1.8-liter BETO DOHC (95-kW or 127Ã, hp) I4 gasoline engines are available domestically. Then, a 1.5-liter fuel-burning engine (66-kW or 89 hp) based on a DOHC Alpha engine is added. The Philippines version, as well as in some European markets, has 1.6 (1599 cc) Beta, DOHC ( G4GR ) generating (86 kW or 115 hp) (in some European markets 66 kW (89 hp) ).
Facelift
The new grille arrived in 1998 for the 1999 model. Lantra in Europe blends into a single front-end design for both sedans and carts. The model receives the model code "RD2" or "J3". A 1.9-liter atmospheric diesel option built by PSA was also added for some European markets, resulting in 68 PS (50 kW).
A choice of new 2.0-liter engine is available. In Australia, the GLS model is an upgrade to the GL model and offers a 2.0-liter engine, velor trim, softer fabric seats and alloy wheels. GLS has a colored rear body plate holders and an exterior side mirror.

Third generation (XD; 2001-2006)
An all-new model (codename XD ) was launched in 2000. The estate fell in favor of a five-door hatchback. Starting in 2001, all American models come with front and front airbags, air conditioning, power lock, power windows and power steering. This simplified dealer's inventory and repair also seeks to enhance Hyundai's image of the car's "value".
Facelift
In 2003, all models were refreshed (codename XD2 ); it introduces new headlamps and taillights, new grille, new front and rear bumpers, fresh hood and rod, and redesigned dashboard.
Trim GLS is the standard for Elantra. The top-of-the-line model, trim GT, comes with a stiffer suspension, leather upholstery, fog lamps, alloy wheels, lip spoiler, and blue luminance instrument clusters. Offered as a hatchback since 2001 as a model vehicle in 2002, the only options for the GT are power moonroof and anti-lock brakes with traction control. The only major choice is the Kenwood MP3/CD deck. GT trim sedan was introduced in 2003 and discontinued in 2005. Trim GT was replaced for the 2006 model with Limited trim, featuring new paint colors, chrome vertical grille, leather interior with leather steering wheel and leather shifter and wood trim. The steel rim with limited trim has a 6-spoke cover shown in the GLS model. GT trim for five doors produced for the rest of the year 2006 model.
Canadian trim levels differ from those in the US: "GT" models come standard with alloy wheels, four-way disc brakes and ABS but skins and TCS are only available on the "premium" GT edition.
XD is available with 1.6-, 1.8- and 2.0-L petrol engines and 2.0-L turbodiesel. The North American model is only available with a 2.0-L gasoline engine. The 1.8-L engine is a modified 1.6-L engine for the New Zealand market.
While compact on the outside, it is listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a mid-size car due to its vast interior. Although the basic powertrain design has changed little since the second generation, fuel economy has increased for Elantras with manual transmission from EPA city rankings of 24 mpg -US (9.8 L/100 km; 29 mpg imp ) to 25 mpg -US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg -imp ), and further to 27 mpg - (8.7Ã, L/100Ã, km; 32 mpg -imp ) in 2006. Cars with automatic transmission return 23 mpg -US (10Ã, L/100Ã, km); 28 mpg -imp ), a reduction of 3 mpg -US (3.6 mpg -imp ). Horsepower was upgraded from 135 hp (100 kW) to 138 hp (102 kW), and torque from 132 to 136, mainly due to the addition of continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) in 2004. Initially, the horsepower rating was incorrectly interpreted as 140 hp (104 kW ). In 2006, Elantra was offered with SULEV emissions rating engines in several US states.
In China, the Elantra XD was produced by Beijing Hyundai from December 23, 2003 to 2010. The car has been used as a taxi in Beijing since 2005 replacing Tianjin Xiali taxi due to fuel costs. Elantra is available in 5-door hatchback from 2007 to 2010 and a sedan form from 2003 to 2010. The initial model from Elantra XD ran through 2010 where facelifted displays different headlamps and rear bumper, radiator and power folding mirrors with integrated turn signals. The 1.6-liter engine is available in taxi and passenger cars paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.8 liter and 4-speed automatic engines are available until 2008.

North America
Only 2.0-liter engine is offered in North America. Unlike the 2006 model of the XD series, the 2007 Elantra GLS trim HD base model does not include air conditioning as standard equipment, but side curtain airbags (front and side only), active head restraints and four-channel disc brakes with four channel channels. Elantra offers the most interior space in its class, leading the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to classify it as a midsize car.
Hyundai offers Hyundai i30 cars in the US and Canada marketed as "Elantra Touring". Elsewhere, the same vehicle is marketed as Hyundai i30cw.
- 2008 model: "Limited" trim level dropped, leaving trim options "GLS" and "SE". Trim SE includes features not available on "GLS" such as telescopic steering and electronic stability control (ESC), with sunroof and leather seats as an option. According to Consumer Reports testing, trim "SE" has much better handling and braking than the basic "GLS" trim.

LPI Hybrid
Hyundai presents the LPI Hybrid at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show, and the sale begins as Avante "LPI Hybrid" in the South Korean market in July 2009. LPI Hybrid (liquefied petroleum injected) is a lightweight hybrid and is the world's first hybrid electric. vehicles to be powered by internal combustion engines built to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as fuel. Hyundai develops technology and all major components in the LPI Hybrid, along with its local partners including electric motors, batteries and low DC/DC converters. The lithium-ion polymer battery, the LPI Hybrid is the first hybrid to adopt, different from lithium-ion batteries, using a more stable and fire-resistant polymer electrolyte supplement than Korean company LG Chem instead of liquid or gel.
The LPI Hybrid comes with a 1.6 liter Gamma engine, an electric motor of 15 kilowatts (20 hp), and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). LPI Hybrid sends 41.9 miles per gallon US (5.61 L/100 km; 50.3 mpg -imp ). Compared to the conventional 1.6-liter model, and considering South Korea's gasoline prices, the LPI Hybrid can travel 39 kilometers (24 mi) for the price of a liter of gasoline, while the conventional model will travel only 15 kilometers (9.3 à mi). The engine emits 99 üg/km of CO 2 , which allows the car to qualify as a Super Ultra Emission Vehicle (SULEV). The LPI Hybrid produces 90 percent fewer emissions than equivalent standard gasoline-powered models, and LPG is a low carbon emitting hydrocarbon fuel that burns cleaner than gasoline or diesel, and is also free of diesel-related particles. LPI Hybrid share powertrain with Kia Forte LPI Hybrid.
The Elantra hybrid comes with a "Eco Guide" tree icon intended to train drivers to develop more eco-friendly driving habits. CVT has optional "E (Eco-Drive)" gear to maximize fuel efficiency. The LPG Hybrid was dropped in Australia due to lack of demand, increased emphasis on brand image and focus shift on cleaner diesel engines.
Fifth generation (MD/UD; 2011-2015)
The fifth-generation Avante debuted at the 2010 Busan International Motor Show in April 2010. It was given the codename "MD" for the sedan, "UD" for the US-produced sedan, and "JK" for the coupe. It features a direct-injection 1.6-L gasoline engine, generating 103 kW (138 hp) and 167 Nm (123 lb-ft) of torque, mated to a new 6-speed automatic or manual transmission. For markets like the Middle East, the 1.6-L engine is a MPI version that delivers 128 hp. The Israeli market accepts Elantra, with 1.6 GDI 132Ã, hp coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission only. The design continues the Hyundai "fluidic sculpture styling" theme first seen in Sonata 2011. The new model went on sale in August 2010 in South Korea, and began selling between late 2010 and early 2011 as a 2011 model. The US version of the fifth generation Elantra started debuted at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. It's powered by a new Nu 1.8-L engine that produces 148 hp (145-hp-PZEV) and 131 à £ lb- (130-lb-ft-PZEV). Fuel economy is aided by low resistance coefficient of only 0.28. Nu machine blocks are made of aluminum, not cast iron before.
Estimated gas mileage EPA 40/29 is questioned by Consumer Watchdog, Santa Monica CA's consumer group. The USA Today author, Jefferson Graham claims to get a combined city/highway mpg 22 mpg. However, real-world tests by Popular Mechanics show significantly better fuel savings than EPA MPG estimates. In addition, the editor of The Truth About Cars tested the real-world MPG, which led them to give Consumer Watchdog a thumbs up. Estimated EPA mileage initially 29 mpg -US (8.1 L/100 km; 35 mpg -imp ) in the city and 40 mpg -US (5.9Ã, L/100Ã, km; 48 mpg -imp ) on the highway but revised to 28 mpg -US (8.4Ã, L/100Ã, km; 34 mpg -imp ) in the city and 38 mpg -US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg -imp ) on the highway due to a series of procedural error testing in November 2012. The foundations of the second generation i30 and Elantra are similar in their configuration and makeup. The similarity between the second generation i30 and Elantra continues in front and suspension characteristics.
It is available in two trim levels, GLS and Limited. The sixth generation (AD; 2016-present)
Following the launch of Avante in South Korea in September 2015, the sixth-generation Elantra was announced to be released for sale in February 2016 for the 2017 model year in North America. Two trims are present in the 2017 model release: SE and Limited (Value and Sport Edition released later). In India, the AD series Hyundai Elantra was launched on August 23, 2016 with the option of gasoline and diesel engines. The petrol variant displaces 2.0 liters, while the diesel engine is a 1.6 liter unit.
The design of the car has been transformed into a more conservative appearance. The "fluidic sculpture" design that has survived throughout the Hyundai portfolio since 2011 is lost in the sixth generation Elantra. This car is now more like a fastback with its roofline tilted from the windshield to the rear of the car and has fewer curves overall with pentagonal head and tail lights, hexagonal grille, and redesigned body panels and bumpers that emphasize straight lines along the body.. The windshield is pulled back from the hood farther than the previous generation, making the appearance of a more traditional sedan. The interior is also less curved, with a cockpit, audio controls/temp and drawers in a bow line on the dashboard. This is done without reducing the previous generation interior cabin space at 110.2 cubic feet (while Elantra is sold under compact grade, it is classified as mid-size sedan according to EPA.)
Newly introduced for 2017 is ECO Trim, a package that replaces the standard engine with a 1.4-liter Turbocharged DOHC Inline-4, 128 hp (95 kW) Kappa engine along with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission that increases use MPG for customers who drive environmentally friendly cars.
Also new, the SE model has been recorded coming standard with fewer features compared to the previous generation trim levels, and includes a four-cylinder fourteen hp (110 kW) 2.0 liter Nu engine and mated to both manual transmissions 6 speed or 6 speed automatic transmission: SE Popular Equipment package that includes alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic headlamps, and stereo touch screen with Android Auto support and Apple CarPlay; and the Tech Package (which requires the Popular Equipment package) that includes daytime LED lights, blind spots, and rear traffic alert systems, push start/push start buttons, handsfree luggage access and monochromatic TFT cluster (replacing the LCD Cluster which comes standard). In North America, the SE Popular Equipment package is not available on the SE model with 6-speed manual transmission.
In the mid-year 2017 model, steering audio controls become standard equipment in all trims. Trim Edition Mid-level values ââare also added. Above the Popular Equipment and Technology Packages for SE, it includes an adjustable power driver, auto-dimming rearview mirror, sunroof power, and automatic driver power windows.
The Limited Edition package includes a Limited Technology Package with power sunroof, touchscreen stereo with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, heated seats, and ClariFi module to enhance car interior audio; and Ultimate Package (requiring Limited Technology Package) that add automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, smart cruise controller, lane keep assist, and memory preset for mirror/driver seat setup.
- 2018 model year: DISTEL is replacing SE with Popular Equipment Packages, and now includes blind spot monitoring with cross-reroute traffic alerts and line change help, four-wheel disc brakes (not brake discs front and back drum brakes ), and the rear seat cupholder instead of the center console attached. The limited model accepts glossy black interior accents and standard auto-dimming rearview mirrors. All models also receive new gray exterior color options and three years of complementary Blue Link/Homelink services.

Roughly in the mid-year 2017 model, Hyundai released the Sport model for the North American market. Sport slots between Eco and Limited models and are distinguished externally by different headlamps and taillights, ground effects, more aggressive front and rear bumpers, and dual chrome tipped exhausts. Under the hood, Sport has a 1.6 liter turbocharged direct-injected four-cylinder engine that generates power of 201Ã, hp (150Ã,ìW) and 195Ã, lb? Ft (264Ã,? M) torque. Transmission options include a 7-speed automatic double clutch with a traditional 6-speed manual or manual shift mode. Additional modifications to the sport include flat-bottomed steering, red seams on the seat, shift boot and steering, larger front brakes, 18 "alloy wheels, independent multi-link rear suspension, thicker front stabilizer rods and steering ratio tuned to feel faster , sporty.

Naming dispute
Mitsubishi Motors Australia complains that Hyundai Elantra is too close to Elante trim level, the latter used on Magna 1991. The British Lotus and Kia Europe say that Elantra's name is too close to Lotus Elan and his Kia counterpart. In 2001, both Elan and Elante have ceased production but the renaming of Avante is still needed because Audi has the name Avant in Europe. There were also disputes about chassis codes for the years 1996-2000 and the 1999-2000 model. Hyundai states that the code name Elantra 1996-98 is RD and not J2, and code name Elantra 1999-2000 is RD2 and not J3.
