The Toyota Prius c ( c stands for "city"), named Toyota Aqua ( "aqua" is Bahasa Latin for water) in Japan, is a full hybrid gasoline hybrid hatchback manufactured and marketed by Toyota Motor Corporation. The Prius c is the third member of the Prius family, and incorporates features of a Yaris-sized car with a hybrid powertrain. The Prius c is priced lower than the conventional Prius and has a higher fuel economy in city driving under the US Environmental Protection Agency's testing cycle. The Prius c is classified by the EPA as the most fuel efficient compact car of 2012 when plug-in electric vehicles are excluded.
Aqua production version was launched at 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Production of the Prius c was introduced in the US in January 2012 the North American International Automotive Exhibition in Detroit. Aqua was launched in Japan in December 2011 with a price of à ¥ 1,69 million ( US $ 21,700 ). Sales in several Asian markets began in January 2012. Prius c Concept
Toyota Prius C concept car was unveiled at the North American International Car Show in January 2011 in Detroit. Toyota explains that the 'c' in 'Prius c' means "city" -centric vehicle because it is much smaller than the normal Prius and is intended for younger buyers without families who do not need much space.
Together with the introduction of Toyota Aqua production version at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the car manufacturer also showcased two other Aqua concepts, Aqua Kiriri and Aqua Piriri versions.

Specifications
Built on an enhanced and oriented platform by the Yaris, the Prius c features Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive Generation 3 with DOHC 1.5 liter four-cylinder, 16-valve with VVT-i petrol engine, same engine model and displacement as in Early Prius but now "without belt", with all drive accessories replaced by electric motors operating whether the engine is running or not.
Unlike previous Prius HSD, the Prius c incorporates a separate planetary disassembly line for ICE/MG1 (internal combustion engine/generator-motor one, this line is commonly referred to as "power separation device", with MG1 performing double duty as an ICE starter and alternator battery charging HV to charge HV battery, HV through dc-dc converter to charge LV battery), and MG2 (motor-generator two, this line is newly referred to as "motor speed reduction device", with MG2 doing double duty as traction motor (propulsion) and HV battery recharging alternators), thus allowing higher electrical performance (this is limited mainly by the MG1-to-final-drive ratio, and, of course, MG1 capacity), and higher performance hybrids (this limited mainly by the MG2-to-final-drive ratio, and, of course, MG2 capacity), with gear ratios, the rotational speeds of MG1 and MG2, are now better adapted to eg each of the sion functions, in smaller and lighter weight packs. The chain drives found in Gen 1 and Gen 2 HSD are also removed, replaced by helical gears in Gen 3 HSD. The MG2 ratio is 2.5: 1 rather than 1: 1 as in the previous HSD, thus allowing the physical size of MG2 to be reduced to the MG1 cross section. The Prius v and Prius Plug-in share the design of this basic 3 Gen (P410 transaxle, for both of these), but not its specific implementation, and unique to the Prius c and its lower maximum weight, and low HSD horsepower (P510 transaxle, for Prius c, North America; Prius Aqua, Japan; and Yaris Hybrid, Europe).
The hybrid system includes new high voltage batteries and inverters, and a smaller additional 12 volt battery. Both batteries are placed under the seat of the rear passenger seat, and are easily accessible by service personnel, but are protected from possible collision damage by the welded steel tubular enclosure that also acts as a support for the rear seats. Placed under the passenger seat, a large high voltage battery does not affect the trunk space, unlike previous Prius battery traction. This location for the traction battery also significantly lowered the center of gravity of the Prius c, and improved road handling.
The hybrid powertrain weighs about 40 kg (less than à £) compared to the standard Prius Liftback. The 1NZ-FXE engine generates 54 kW (73 hp) and the HSD motor has 45Ã,à kW (60 hp) power. Total output is rated at 74 kW (99 hp).
Compared to the standard Prius Liftback, the 2,550 mm (100.4 in) wheelbase of the Prius C is 150 mm (5.9 inches) shorter, and the overall length of 4,000 mm (157.3 in) is 490 mm (19.1 in) shorter. This puts the Prius c in the American subcompact class. The Japanese version also complies with Japanese government dimensions regulations that reduce tax obligations. The use of the 1.5 liter engine also reduces the annual Japanese Government road tax liability.
Fuel economy and emissions
Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency's testing cycle, the Prius c 2017 is ranked 48 mpg -US (4.9 L/100 km; 58 mpg -imp ) city and 43mpg -US (5.5Ã, L/100Ã, km; 52Ã, mpg -imp ) highway, for a combined fuel economy of 46 mpg -US (5.1Ã, L/100Ã, km; 55 mpg -imp ). The emus c emission certification is SULEV.
Prius c ranks by EPA as the 2012 model year of the most fuel-efficient compact cars excluding plug-in electric vehicles. When an electric-powered car is considered, the Chevrolet Volt is ranked at the top of the compact car category, followed by Prius c.
Production
Prius c assembled at Iwate Toyota Motor Factory East Japan, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, in Kanegasaki, Iwate in northern Japan. Toyota's initial production capacity for Aqua/Prius c at this facility is 12,000 units per month, with a maximum production capacity of 30,000 units per month.
The decision to produce Toyota Motor East Japan (formerly Kanto Auto Works) was motivated by the 2011 T - hsu earthquake and tsunami - Toyota provides a valuable economic contribution to the region in providing jobs and development related to production.
2015 Update
The first facelift Prius c was presented at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2014.
