robotic arm is a type of mechanical arm, usually programmed, with functions similar to the human arm; the arm may be the total number of mechanisms or possibly part of a more complex robot. Links from the manipulator are connected by connections that allow rotational motion (as in an articulated robot) or translational (linear) displacement. Links from manipulators can be considered to form a kinematic chain. The terminus of the kinematic chain manipulator is called the final effector and it is analogous to the human hand.

The final effector, or hand robot, can be designed to perform desired tasks such as welding, gripping, etc. rotating, depending on the application. For example, a robotic arm on an automotive assembly line performs various tasks such as welding and component rotation and placement during assembly. In some circumstances, close emulation of the human hand is desirable, as in robots designed to disarm and dispose of bombs.

Type

  • Robot Cartesian/Gantry robot : Used for selecting and workplaces, sealant applications, assembly operations, handling machine tools and arc welding. This is a robot whose arms have three prism joints, whose axes coincide with the Cartesian coordinator.
  • Cylindrical robot : Used for assembly operations, handling on machine tools, point welding, and handling on diecasting machines. It's a robot whose ax forms a cylindrical coordinate system.
  • Spherical robot/Polar robot Used for handling machine tools, point welding, diecasting, fettling machines, gas welding and arc welding. It's a robot whose ax forms a polar coordinate system.
  • SCARA Robot : Used to select and place jobs, sealant applications, assembly operations, and machine tool handling. This robot has two parallel swivel joints to provide compliance in the field.
  • Articulated robot : Used for assembly operations, diecasting, fettling machines, gas welding, arc welding and spray painting. It's a robot whose arm has at least three swivel joints.
  • Parallel robot : One used is a mobile platform that handles cockpit flight simulators. This is a robot whose arms have a prism joint or a simultaneous turn.
  • Anthropomorphic robots : The shape in a human-like way, with independent fingers and thumbs.

Well-known robotic weapons

In space, the Aircraft Shuttle Remote Manipulator System also known as Canadarm or SRMS and its successor Canadarm2 are examples of multi-degree free robotic weapons. This robotic arm has been used to perform various tasks such as Space Shuttle inspection using a boom that is deployed exclusively with the camera and sensors attached to the final effectors, as well as satellite deployment and maneuvering of the Space Shuttle cargo space.

The Curiosity rover on Mars also uses a robotic arm.

Cheap robot weapons

In the decade 2010 the availability of cheap robotic arms increased substantially. Although such robotic arms are mostly marketed as hobbies or educational devices, applications in laboratory automation have been proposed, such as their use as autosampler.
