Initial career
Hands started his career in 1982 as an eurobond trader at Goldman Sachs. He was appointed head of Eurobond trade in 1986 and then rose to head of global asset management for the European Goldman division in 1990. In 1994, Hands left Goldman to establish Nomura's Principal Finance Group, which focuses on private equity investments in Europe. Hands join Nomura after three other banks, including Goldman, rejected his investment plan. In Nomura, Hands and his team completed more than $ 20 billion in leveraged purchases. In 2000, Hands reportedly generated profits for banks of more than $ 1.9 billion making him a financial star in London. The most famous acquisitions in Nomura include Annington Homes, as well as William Hill, bookies, and Angel Trains, a British stock company. In addition, Hands effectively became the largest publishers in the UK through a series of acquisitions in the 1990s.
Terra Firma
In 2002, Hand founded Terra Firma Capital Partners, as a spinout from Nomura, which he has built as one of Europe's largest private equity investors. Terra Firma debuted with a private equity fund of EUR2 billion, soon making it one of the larger private equity investors in Europe.
The company's initial investment, while still a division of Nomura, focuses on housing (Annington Homes), rental companies and pubs. Since 2002, the company has invested heavily in waste management (Waste Recycling Group), energy (BGCL, East Surrey Holdings, Phoenix Natural Gas, aircraft rental (AWAS), cinema (Odeon Cinemas/UCI) and music sector (EMI) TFCP has also made significant investments in German residential housing (Deutsche Annington) and toll road services (Tank & Rast).
Terra Firma is now also one of the world's leading private equity investors in renewable energy. Its investments include the UK-based green energy business (Infinis), the US wind energy business (EverPower) and the Italian solar energy business (RTR).
Hands and Terra Firma are also known for the failure of investment in UK music company EMI, which was later taken over by Citigroup, the principal lender in the investment. Citigroup took ownership of EMI Group from Terra Firma on February 1, 2011, removing the company's investment and removing the debt of à £ 2.2 billion. Despite implementing operational turnaround, Terra Firma reportedly lost $ 2.5 billion in EMI transactions, representing about a third of Terra Firma's investor capital as well as over 60% of Hands' personal net worth. Hands have spent most of 2010 engaged in litigation with Citigroup, claiming the bank was involved in fraud during an EMI auction in 2007. The suit was tried in New York at the end of 2010 and resulted in jury findings in favor of Citigroup. The ruling was later canceled in May 2013, after a US federal appeals court found that American court judge Jed Rakoff had wrongly instructed the jury on British law.
A new court led by a judge was heard by Mr. Justice Burton in London in June 2016. After two days of evidence, during that time Mr. Hand acknowledged more than once that he did not have that 'memory anymore', the lawyer for Terra Firma pulled back the case with all the costs Terra Firma had to bear. Burton said: "I believe this is the right result." Citi said: "We always state that the allegations made by Terra Firma are entirely unfounded." The hands say that the claim has brought goodwill, but the documentation and memory of these events after nine years is no longer sufficient to meet the high demands of the required evidence, and that the matter is now closed.
In an interview with Mail on Sunday in March 2017, Guy Hands suggested that Terra Firma had recovered from EMI's investment, stating: "More than 200 investors, hardly anyone mentions it now, for them and Terra Firma is over. has moved. "
