Wolfe grew up in San Diego, California, graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara, where he studied mechanical and environmental engineering and political science, later earned a law degree at San Diego University. According to Wolfe, he became intolerant of dairy products when he was 18 years old and stopped taking them, which made him explore various diets and by the time he was 24, he went on a diet of organic and raw foods. He introduced the diet to Thor Bazler (later known as Stephen Arlin), who had studied in the same high school as Wolfe, and this led to the establishment of the First Law of Nature.
